(9,748 posts)He was an Anti-Machine reformer in Cook County politics before Congress.
Before Quigley IL5 was a power district. Our latest congress critters were:
Rahm Emmanuel
Rod Blagojevich
some Republican placeholder for one term due to scandal
Dan Rostenkowski ensnared in, and largely forgiven for, most pathetic political scandal ever: abuse of postage stamp use.
For decades we had a committeeman, Ed Kelly, who was nicknamed the Mayor of the North Side. The Daley Machine arose out of the South Side Irish and were never as all encompassing as people think.
Even on the South Side you had the Hyde Park Reformers who kick started Obama's political career. While Obama never joined the machine (it was the other way around, they had to jump on his bandwagon), he turned out not to be a Reformer.
And then Rahm, of course, came via the Clintons and never held public office or any position in local government before getting elected to Congress.

Bruce Braley (D) Iowa - 1
PeaceNikki
(27,985 posts)You all may remember him from this move:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Sensenbrenner
On June 17, 2005, Sensenbrenner, the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, abruptly ended a meeting where Republicans and Democrats were supposed to be debating the renewal of the USA PATRIOT Act and walked out in response to Democratic members raising issues regarding human rights violations at the Guantanamo Bay detainment camp and the ongoing Iraq war. He ordered the court reporter to halt transcriptions of the proceedings, C-SPAN cameras covering the meeting be shut off, and that discussion on the issue be halted. Sensenbrenner defended his actions by claiming that the Democrats and witnesses had repeatedly violated House rules in discussing issues he believed to be unrelated to the subject of the meeting.[11] His abrupt walkout was contrary to House parliamentary procedure, which is to adjourn either on motion or without objection. Political journalist Matt Taibbi described the incident in a profile of the 109th Congress published around October 2006: "Last year, Sensenbrenner became apoplectic when Democrats who wanted to hold a hearing on the Patriot Act invoked a little-known rule that required him to let them have one. "Naturally, he scheduled it for something like 9 a.m. on a Friday when Congress wasn't in session, hoping that no one would show," recalls a Democratic staffer who attended the hearing. "But we got a pretty good turnout anyway." Sensenbrenner kept trying to gavel the hearing to a close, but Democrats again pointed to the rules, which said they had a certain amount of time to examine their witnesses. When they refused to stop the proceedings, the chairman did something unprecedented: He simply picked up his gavel and walked out. "He was like a kid at the playground," the staffer says. And just in case anyone missed the point, Sensenbrenner shut off the lights and cut the microphones on his way out of the room. Commenting on Sensenbrenner's actions on The Daily Show, comedian Jon Stewart said, "Oh my God, he literally took his gavel and went home; we are officially being governed by children."
Or when THIS guy referred to Michelle Obama's "big butt"
Chan790
(20,176 posts)He'll be there forever unless he decides to run for another office or loses in a primary. The GOP has stopped running serious candidates against him...the last GOP nominee hand-billed me at the Wheaton Metro with propaganda that CvH was an Antisemite secretly working to destroy Israel...the one before that ran on the "I'm a lifelong Democrat but nobody else wanted the GOP nomination so I took it to run a campaign on the promise I will get rid of Pepco" platform.
The Pepco guy did better than the conspiracy theorist. People really hate Pepco here in eastern Monty County, MD...the power goes out in 10 minute super-cell t-storms and is out for days. According to Pepco, that's just how it's going to be.

1) Superpowers to mess with journalists are for Republicans to use against alternative media, not for Obongo to use against the MSM.
2) IRS approved almost everyone's 501(c)(4) except for a couple of notable left-leaners... but it's still OUTRAGEOUSLY unacceptable to do anything that might show the apathetic peopl... vot... huma... those animals in my district who aren't billionaires... those people... might show those people in easy-to-understand terms how elections are purchased.
3) 4 Dead Americans. 9/11 doesn't count. Doesn't matter that everyone in my party voted against anything and everything Obummer and Shillary asked for; they should have added the security in Benghazi anyway. Then I could hold hearings about how they exceeded their authority.
