JUPITER, Fla. Witnesses at a Jupiter bowling alley said they thought it was a firecracker at first, but it turned out to be a gunshot.
A man accidentally shot himself in the leg while bowling at Jupiter Lanes about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said. Witnesses said the man had been carrying a gun in the pocket of his shorts.
"The guy just stepped up to bowl," Jim Miller said. "I think he hit his leg on his back swing."
Added fellow witness Mike Martin: "The ball hit him in the leg, which triggered the revolver."

(11,417 posts)This why I don't ever want to be around a gunner carrying a gun and why we need laws to make it the business owners choice to allow guns in their establishment. I would only do business where I knew there were no guns like I can with smokers.
My right to life liberty and the persuit of happiness trumps some gunners right to shoot his gun off in a public place.
Also you should lose the right to carry a gun if you can't prevent it from going off accidentally.

MineralMan
(146,324 posts)A guy's gotta have a round chambered and ready for his bowling ball to fire at any time.
RC
(25,592 posts)When the hammer goes back, the cylinder advances one round. When the hammer falls, the newly spent round stays under the hammer till the next hammer action. Doesn't matter whether you have to cock it first or just pull the trigger.
MineralMan
(146,324 posts)put the hammer in the cocked position with a live round in the chamber. Then, the revolver is ready to fire when the trigger is pulled, without the need to rotate the cylinder to bring a round into firing position.
Given the story, it appears that the pistol in the man's pocket may have been a single-action revolver or even a double-action revolver, in either case with the hammer at full cock. It's lucky that was the only cock involved, I think.

(19,257 posts)Put your hammer on an empty chamber, and your gun "only" holds 5 rounds instead of 6. And we all know that that one round is all that stands between you and getting your brains eaten by a zombie.
