Police Chief Calls Out Armed Protest Threat In Washington DC
A July 4 march encourages gun advocates to carry loaded rifles into Washington, DC and knowingly break the law. Although described as a nonviolent act of civil obedience, organizer Adam Kokesh implied a threat of violence if the government chooses to make it violent. He encourages participants to peacefully submit to law enforcers but underlines that point with, We are truly saying in the SUBTLEST way possible that we would rather die on our feet than live on our knees.
Since Friday, more than 2,000 people have RSVPed to the march to put the government on notice.
In a local news channel interview pointed out by Politico, Metropolitan Police Department Chief Cathy Lanier explained that this is an open disregard for DC law:
When you cross with firearms and youre not in compliance with the law now youre talking about a criminal offense and theres going to be some action by police. Obviously there has been no permit filed by the organizer and weve not made contact with the organizer yet. But we will, and well make sure they understand that if they want to pass through the District of Columbia with loaded firearms as long as they are in compliance with the firearms laws for transportation of firearms to the District, were all for it. But passing into the District of Columbia with firearms is a violation of the law and well have to treat it as such.

You totally missed the point of my post. This is not some righteous civil disobedience, so please don't equivocate them with legitimate causes. They are scared bigots who think a black president is coming for their precious guns.

(19,926 posts)However, protesters should be met with appropriate tactics, which I'm sure you remember the Occupy protesters were largely not. They were treated to a lot of undeserved brutality. Pepper sprayed for standing in place. Sucker punched. I'm sure you saw it.
Also, Occupy protests weren't armed and weren't bragging about being armed. Where as here we have a bunch of, let's face it, wackos, marching in with loaded weapons where it is illegal to do so. That is hardly the makings of what one would think of as a peaceful protest. And there's also the protest leader saying: We are truly saying in the SUBTLEST way possible that we would rather die on our feet than live on our knees. Sounds to me like they are planning on resisting arrest, arrest that we all know is immenent given that they are committing a criminal act, not a simple protest. And with loaded weapons. It's going to be interesting...

(53,661 posts)Even if you have a permit, there's never a short supply of assholery from any large gathering. Jesus the Meek is not out marching against himself. Those who are truly peaceful know how to behave.
Two thousand Libertarian douchebags with loaded rifles shaking their junk at law enforcement is pure dumbfuckery and not about peace or justice. They're playing 'I'm gonna do this just because I wanna and you can't make me, nyah, nyah.'
Everyone in Earth School will learn and those who insist on being petulant brats will be schooled, like it or not. The world is not kindergarten, and guns are not a game. Bringing the name of Occupy into this display of Libertarian tripe is a bit odd. All protests are not equal.

escalation on Cambodia so it wasn't exactly the friendliest day with the police forces. There were a hundred times more of us than these rifle toting fools as we went to Capitol to hear the Democratic speakers. Of course, we were unarmed because we were there for peace, and trained in non-violence techniques to handle anything that would occur, because things happen.
There were all kinds of police, (if IIRC, seven different kinds) on our tails the entire way until we dispersed to go home. As professional and they and the mounted police were, their presence was as strong and unavoidable as I imagine these yokels will learn there.
Tear gas was employed when some loud mouths went after the police on the fringe of the crowd. We weren't there for a pissing contest, but the police didn't put up with any crap. Those characters had bragged the night before how many times they'd been arrested and been bailed by their parents, and we avoided them like the plague. No one was going to bail us out and we were thousands of miles away from home and had jobs.
LOL at the unedited post, I often drop negatives in my sentences as I rush. It changes the meaning of the post. What I meant to say was that those cops won't be swayed by any shenanigans there.

(28,498 posts)Here are some DC gun laws the NRAers will have to obey:
*Magazine capacity restricted to 10
*Owner license required
*Concealed carry permits prohibited
*Open carry prohibited
*Possession of unregistered firearms prohibited for both residents and non-residents
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gun_laws_in_the_District_of_Columbia
About concealed carry: The District of Columbia does not permit the concealed carrying of firearms. Open carry is also prohibited. A lawsuit was filed on August 6, 2009, to compel the district to issue permits to carry weapons.
I hope the NRAers will read and understand these laws before making the journey...

(15,689 posts)I don't think you get to claim a protective mantle of "non-violence" or "civil disobedience" anymore. Not that those are actually legal protections when you are breaking laws, but they are a claim on the moral high ground. By abjuring violence-even in the face of police violence- and protesting without bringing along any "self-defense" in the form of weapons, nonviolent protesters demonstrate that their political expression is not a danger to the community and that any use of violence to suppress it is illegitimate. Bring your gun with you while disobeying the law deliberately, and you are making a clear and unmistakable threat of violence to law enforcement. The community is quite reasonable in fearing for its safety if/when armed men start parading illegally.

(24,411 posts)Seriously. They think they're going to "put the government on notice" and they're going to do it by breaking the law and illegally carrying firearms?
This is scary, because these people are obviously too stupid to have any common sense or decency. And they'll have guns.
Aren't these the same people who throw the Constitution in our faces, whenever we so much as discuss rational gun-control measures or even background checks? Yet, they're willing to break laws?
Most of these yahoos are amped up on Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and other incendiary talk-show hosts who undoubtedly will be sitting comfortably behind their microphones, while their lemmings are out storming the castle.

(8,155 posts)The laws in DC prohibit any form of carry that does not involve the firearm being unloaded and packed away.
So if these dumbasses want to march down the mall with a bunch of shouldered rifle cases and look like impotent dipshits, I hope they have fun.
But my gut is telling me that no one is going to show up. If any do, it will only be a handful.

At that point the cops will have absolutely no choice but to machinegun anyone holding a gun to keep a huge firefight from happening...and the Right will blame it on Obama even though he won't have had anything to do with it.
