Jeanne Cooper, longtime star of the soap opera "The Young and the Restless" and mother of actor Corbin Bernsen, died Wednesday at age 84, Bernsen announced on Facebook and Twitter.
"My mother passed away this morning just a short time ago, peaceful with my sister by her side, in her sleep," Bernsen wrote. "She has been a blaze her entire life, that beacon, that boxer I spoke of earlier. She went the full twelve rounds and by unanimous decision ... won! And while her light finally gave into the wind that gives flight to all our journeys, there will always be a glimmer left behind by what she stood for."
Cooper won an Emmy for playing wealthy Katherine Chancellor for 40 years on the CBS soap opera. In 1984, her character was shown having a facelift at the same time that Cooper underwent the operation herself.

It was a pretty big deal when she finally won a Daytime Emmy...she was a long-time also-ran, like Susan Lucci.
RIP

(11,464 posts)I started watching YR back in the late 70s one day at my late grandmothers house, a few years after the show started.
First Dallas lost their JR
now Genoa City lost their Katherine.

(29,090 posts)Was not a Soap watcher, per se, but my mom was, so I got to know lots of the characters.

(20,819 posts)I'm in my late forties and have watched that woman practically all of my life, since my mom started watching Y and R from the beginning, in 1973. She's one of those dynamos that seem eternal, that you think will live forever. SIGH. Tears and thoughts and prayers for her family and her show family (many of her colleagues on the show have been on with her for decades).
I remember being excited picking out her guest spots on such shows as Big Valley, Gunsmoke, etc., when I'd see them in reruns.

(46,185 posts)First, CBS Radio messed up and called Y&R a sitcom, not a soap opera.
Like the passing of Anna Lee (General Hospital), Ms. Cooper's passing is a milestone.

(25,551 posts)She also had a hunky son, Phillip. Two young ladies, Cricket and Nina were fighting over him.

(9,350 posts)I am not trying to be mean or nit picky, but I am pretty sure Philip was Jill's son. Jill had and affair with Katherine's husband and Philip was the result. You are right that Nina and Cricket fought over Philip. Nina eventually had a son for Philip.

(1,357 posts)I've watched from the beginning and although I took breaks to tend to "real life", I got hooked again last year while I was unemployed. Mrs. C. was always one of my favorite characters - cutting through the Genoa City BS and making things happen. She very much reminded me of my mom (not the millionaire part, unfortunately).
Safe journey, Mrs. C!

(396 posts)My grandparents watched all the CBS soap operas. So Mrs. Chancellor (Mrs. Sterling when I was a kid), was like a part of the family. Every time one of these soap actors die or game show hosts die or soaps are cancelled, it's like a part of my childhood dies with them.
