Massachusetts AFL-CIO endorses Democrat Ed Markey in Senate special election

The Massachusetts AFL-CIO has endorsed Democratic U.S. Rep. Edward Markey of Malden in the U.S. Senate special election.

The union did not endorse in the Democratic primary because neither Markey nor U.S. Rep. Stephen Lynch of Boston, a former ironworker and union president, got the two-thirds vote needed for an endorsement.

AFL-CIO president Steven Tolman told the Boston Herald that Markey got “overwhelming” support from union board members, more than the necessary two-thirds.
