I am getting a new Galaxy S 4!!

Today's my birthday and my daughter (and her father) bought me one! Well, they pre-ordered it. (The phone isn't actually available quite yet.)

I've heard a lot about it from my daughter (who is also getting one), the internet, TV and on the radio. Mostly good. My 3 year old, cracked screen, G2 has served me well but is now history - and I'm so excited about my new phone!!

It is the phone that transfers info by tapping the back of the phone to the back of another S4. Along with other great features I'd never hear of. I can't wait!!

...we live in some amazing times. The other day I was reading a magazine from 1930 that was predicting what the world of 2030 would be like. Among the big "revelations" was that we'd be able to create humans outside the womb and we'd be watching pictures in natural colors on our radios. Today's phones are amazing in all the things they do and the promise of the future. I got involved with internet radio back in the mid 90s...got involved in a project that developed the codecs used in many of today's phones (AAC format). A decade ago I was telling people they'd one day be listening to music and watching TV on their phones and got very strange looks. Today it's like Duh!!!

Enjoy your new phone. I have an Android Excite that is nearly two years old...a greybeard compared to your S 4. Enjoy and cheers!!

We certainly do!! And I feel privileged to be a part of it - to have been born at just the right time to witness so much! (When I was a kid my foster father worked on the 3 room computer at McDonnell Douglas.)

11. I just got my first iPhone, an iPhone 4 and have a long way to go to learning it.

We really have to get away from calling these things "phones". They seem to do everything but make the morning coffee, and there probably is an app for that somewhere.

19. I'm getting a Nokia Lumia 920 when I'm due for a new phone.

My phone now is OK, I really badly want to try Windows Phone 8.

It was one of the first phones with internet browser and keyboard/keypad. And it was a great little phone! I hope you post when you get your new one and let us know how it is.

24. When you say she's buying it for you...does that include the monthly fee?

I have a pay as you go phone. I don't understand these other types of phones that people get....they pay a lot for the phone...and then what? There's no minutes you can buy for the month or year. So it's a contract? So it's a big deal that someone buys you a phone, and then what do you do with it? Do you have to go looking for a company that will let you use it, activate it, or something? Each company has a list of phones it will let you use, right?

This has always been mysterious to me. You buy a phone, but you can't use it because you have to have a contract or something. But when Ilook online, each cell phone service will let users own only certain phones. Why IS that? I don't get it.

Some of my co-workers have Samsung Galaxies. They look awesome and are a good size. I can't get one, though. I use pay-as-you-go, which I don't think will let you use the Galaxy.

31. She's buying me the phone (one I would not buy for myself).

We already have a family service plan with 4 lines (phones), unlimited everything. Text messaging, photo sharing, internet, GPS, phone calls...to anyone, any time. The monthly fee doesn't change. I just switch out the sim card from my old phone.

No cell phone service lets you use just any phone you want. There's a list of phones they allow, isn't there?
