This cartoon is nauseating to me for many reasons. On the surface it states that Islamic terrorists are the cause of why countries can't coexist. The coexist sticker is seen by many as a kumbaya-type hippie wishful thinking statement, but the very people who think of the sticker that way have a very hard time expressing themselves against a peace-embracing statement such as religious coexistence. The coexist sticker embraces religious solidarity and thus embraces secular government because you must have a secular government for a multitude of religions to thrive among the masses. Now enter the Islamic terrorists and you have a reason for those who point at religious coexistence as a pipe-dream to make statements such as this cartoon. Their contention is that Americans can deny it as much as they want, but we are at war with Islam; label ourselves as secular or multi-faith as much as we want, but the Islamic terrorists see America as Christian and to deny this is to deny reality (an entire documentary exists trying to prove this sentiment http://holywars.tv/). Their contention is that the "denial" undermines America's strength and coexistence thoughts are folly, wussy, and liberal child-like immaturity that's equivalent to an elementary school kid wishing for world peace. When Islamic terrorist events happen and are directed at America their attitude is that it might have been humorous to let the 10-year-old drive the truck down the dirt road, but now it's time for the adult to retake the wheel. This is 'Merica, we're Christians 'round here, time ta kit singin' kumbaya and take dis Islamo evil-doers out! This nauseates me further when hearing about Syria, their "government" and how hard it will be to try and keep the radical Islamic leadership from taking hold and instead have a more secular government (this as reported by NPR). Okay, so, promoting secular government is good as long as it's in countries that would otherwise install an Islamic fundamentalist government. However, when we talk about secular government in America and being inclusive, and coexisting ... that's weak and liberal pipe-dreams. Islamic fundamentalism and Christian fundamentalism ... both are bad and those who attempt to define reality that you're on one side or the other when it comes to fundamentalism are a huge problem regardless of what side of the pond you're on ... my 2¢.

(13,257 posts)...for the most part, all those religions and perspectives coexist and even cohabit peacefully in this country and many others, every single day. It's a simple mind that wants to do away with the idea of unity because of an act of terror. People who think that way have let the terrorists win in their own lives and they want to spread that way of thinking to everyone else.
... the sentiment is illustrated here:

(13,257 posts)But yes, it isn't just Islamic Extremism that threatens co-existence. Anyone who pushes religious conformity and uniformity on others is doing their best to destroy true individualism and unity. Extremist Christians are no less guilty of this than others.

Really? Wow ... so you think coexistence is fantasy.

(21,977 posts)The cartoon says to me that extremists are making coexistence much more difficult, however. And that's ALL it says.
Don't put words in my mouth.

(21,977 posts)Absolutely. See my post above. Extremists of ANY faith, convinced that nobody has the truth but them, are dangerous.
