I've been trying since last October to get a job in Washington state and I got great news today! I start my new job in Washington state next month! I am very excited to start my new job in a new place (never lived that far west or ever been to Washington so I am really looking forward to it). I'll let everyone know how things go once I get out there!

(8,698 posts)Trying to decide where to live. Looking at Olympia, Tumwater or Yelm. Looking at all the resources I can find. Schools, city government and crime are my biggest concerns. Opinions are welcome

(115,677 posts)can't remember who, sorry. State capital of course, and Evergreen College is there which pulls in a lot of people doing interesting things. Liberal area mostly I think.

(423 posts)It's right off Interstate 5, with easy access to Olympia and Tacoma.
(Check out Priest Point Park in Olympia when you get there. I used to make that a regular trip even when I lived 45 minutes away.)

Japan quake studies suggest harder jolt to NW possible
Studies of last year's giant Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan suggest that shaking from a Cascadia megaquake could be stronger than expected along the coasts of Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, researchers reported Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

VANCOUVER, B.C. Scientists are still unraveling last year's giant Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and some of what they're finding doesn't bode well for the Pacific Northwest.
Detailed analyses of the way the Earth warped along the Japanese coast suggest that shaking from a Cascadia megaquake could be stronger than expected along the coasts of Washington, Oregon and British Columbia, researchers reported Sunday at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
"The Cascadia subduction zone can be seen as a mirror image of the Tohoku area," said John Anderson, of the University of Nevada.

I'm in Seattle. Really, summer is nice (when it falls on a Saturday) but it's true about the sun. Some folks get depressed. I like the weather but I'm kind of weird that way.

There are lots of nice places to live there. I would steer clear of Yelm though because it is home to some anti-tax anti-government groups - the angry sort.

(809 posts)In the winter Olympia has more cloudy days than Seattle, if your house is dark it can be a problem. People use the Seasonal Affective Disorder lights, and drink lots of coffee.
On the other hand, rarely snows, not too hot in the summer, no mosquitoes to speak of and it is beautiful. 4" slugs, though.
