Roundup, An Herbicide, Could Be Linked To Parkinson's, Cancer And Other Health Issues, Study Shows
April 25 (Reuters) - Heavy use of the world's most popular herbicide, Roundup, could be linked to a range of health problems and diseases, including Parkinson's, infertility and cancers, according to a new study.
The peer-reviewed report, published last week in the scientific journal Entropy, said evidence indicates that residues of "glyphosate," the chief ingredient in Roundup weed killer, which is sprayed over millions of acres of crops, has been found in food.
Those residues enhance the damaging effects of other food-borne chemical residues and toxins in the environment to disrupt normal body functions and induce disease, according to the report, authored by Stephanie Seneff, a research scientist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and Anthony Samsel, a retired science consultant from Arthur D. Little, Inc. Samsel is a former private environmental government contractor as well as a member of the Union of Concerned Scientists.
"Negative impact on the body is insidious and manifests slowly over time as inflammation damages cellular systems throughout the body," the study says.

(21,646 posts)now about those GMO's that are round up ready and some say of no harm at all...............
Roundup Ready Crops (RR Crops) are genetically engineered crops that have had their DNA altered to allow them to withstand the herbicide glyphosate (the active ingredient of Monsanto's herbicide Roundup). They are also known as "glyphosate tolerant crops." RR crops deregulated in the U.S. include: corn, soybeans, canola, cotton, sugarbeets, and alfalfa. When planting Glyphosate Tolerant crops, a farmer can spray the entire crop with glyphosate, killing only the weeds and leaving the crop alive. Yum

(34,658 posts)I wonder if it also is related to the increase in domestic animal cancers. Dogs and cats have direct contact with whatever is sprayed on the ground.

(18,541 posts)They're in the major brands of weed killers, and both have all kinds of hormonal effects.
It's claimed that both chemicals are (basically) biodegradable, but what they don't tell you is that it requires prolonged exposure to UV (sunlight). How long are those chemicals going to stay anywhere that they're going to be exposed to sunlight?
I know a guy who spends much of his summer driving around spraying that crap all over his property. He's elderly, but his health has taken a decided turn for the worse since last summer when he claims to have sprayed over 2,000 gallons over his 200 acres of pasture on the thistles, briars and other weeds. Basically, he looks like death warmed over and has horrible migraine headaches at least once a week.
Dude, the grazing animals know enough to eat around the weeds.

that is a comprehensive paper--thanks!
Roundup (glyphosate) may be the most "biologically disruptive" chemical in our environment.
it's everywhere....

(297,229 posts)where I originally went in 2010 was full of the stuff. I came back after 12 years and it was now infested with monsanto and its type companies and roundup was being used by the state to wipe out weeds. It's obscene.
So I picked all my belongings and moved to the East side. There were other reasons too.. but, that was numero uno. Your health, ya know.
thanks Tx

(8,709 posts)No carpets for me and what about little bare feet on lawns. I became ill when the city of Albuquerque was spraying Malathion for mosquito control (breathing problems which led to environmental illness) and moved to the country about 10 yrs ago. So I'm out in the country, and the small town officials start spraying Roundup on the salt cedar along the arroyos from small planes no less. Our town has no money to do this but our senator at the time had huge supplies of Roundup from the US government (grant or something where the chem company makes millions) for NM towns to do this. Our ignorant local official whose project this was is photographing the Roundup spraying standing under the planes - Guess what? She's sick for the next few yrs and "doesn't know what's wrong with her." Till this day she won't talk to me for criticizing and getting a group together to put some limits on her spray program. Anyway, they killed the salt cedars in the arroyos, which caused some of the arroyos to collapse because it was the trees holding the soil in place.

(19,841 posts)Anyone know anything about these non-toxic alternatives?

There's also the mixture of
vinegar
salt
dish soap
But the problem is the salt may harm other plants so it's only a limited (small amount) alternative.
