Rep. proposes liquor tax holidays in RI
Bill includes 5 periods of tax-free liquor sales
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) A Rhode Island lawmaker proposed a bill that supports a series of five annual tax holidays for liquor sales.
Around holidays like Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, celebrating Rhode Islanders stock up on booze and liquor sales soar.
Especially in Rhode Island, it is very easy to go out-of-state to buy food and drinks if the taxes are favorable elsewhere, said Representative John M. Carnevale, who proposed the bill. I want to make sure that Rhode Island can compete with our neighbors during the big holiday seasons, because it would give our small businesses some much-needed support.
The bill creates five inclusive periods, during which there would be no sales tax on the purchase of alcoholic beverages.
In order to be eligible for the tax holiday, the liquor must be sold in a location where it will not be consumed, such as a liquor store. This excludes bars, pubs, restaurants and anywhere else alcohol is consumed on-site.
