The elder suspect in the Boston bombings regularly attended a mosque and spent time learning to read the Quran, but he struggled to fit in during a trip to his ancestral homeland in southern Russia last year, his aunt said.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev seemed more American than Chechen and "did not fit into the Muslim life" in Russia's Caucasus, Patimat Suleimanova told The Associated Press. She said when Tsarnaev arrived in January 2012, he wore a winter hat with a little pompom, something no local man would wear, and "we made him take it off."...

Investigators are focusing on the six months Tsarnaev spent last year in the predominantly Muslim provinces of Dagestan and Chechnya to see if he was radicalized by the militants in the area who have waged a low-level insurgency against Russian security forces for years....

Tsarnaev's mother told the AP that he greatly enjoyed his time with her relatives, but never traveled to her native village in a mountainous region of Dagestan, which is a hotbed of an ultraconservative strain of Islam known as Wahabbism (sic).

Wahhabism is the brand of Islam practiced by our staunch allies, the Saudis.

that these guys' brand of Islam is not related to wahabbism.

According to the article the older brother's girlfriend knew more about Islam than he did so he was probably attracted to a preacher who offered him a kind of Islam Lite, a simplified version designed for people who don't want to read much, educate themselves or bother with nuances.

3. I don't believe any of the family at this point. Most certainly not the ones Chechnya or Dagestan

The ones in the US and Canada either haven't seen the boys in years and are making unsubstantiated comments, or they are the ones in Chechnya and Dagestan who don't appear to have very great motives (like mom, dad, aunts and uncles all saying the "boys" were set up by the US).
