Questions remain unanswered for 8th grade student arrested over shirt

From the moment 13 News first broke this story on 13 News at 11 on Thursday, emails, Facebook posts and phone calls from people all across the country have been pouring in. Despite all of the attention, Jared Marcum and his family say they're no closer to a resolution than they were when it all began.

Jared Marcum, an 8th grade student, was suspended, arrested and is now facing two charges after refusing to change his shirt.

"People are saying that I did the right thing, that they're proud," Jared said.

The 14-year-old student at Logan Middle School in Logan, West Virginia says the NRA shirt that sparked the controversy now symbolizes a fight that is just getting started.

"What they're doing is trying to take away my rights, my freedom of speech and my second amendment," Jared said.

"You can take the firearms out of the equation, what this about is fundamental rights," Jared's father Allen Lardieri said.

His refusal to change out of a t-shirt with a gun on it got him suspended? Seriously? I'd be darned curious to walk the halls of that school and see what t-shirts are being worn that they're not asking kids to take off.

Complete over-reaction to the depiction of a gun. It's not like kids don't know they exist.

Oh, and I'm for background checks, banning high-capacity magazines and semi-automatic weapons. But I'm also for not over-reacting to something that shouldn't have been and issue in the first place.

Arresting a student over a dress code judgement call? Serious dumb

Fighting a teacher and now going to court over a dress code issue? Seriously dumb

Not having firearms, alcohol etc in the written dress code? Serious dumb

a T-shirt showing two pigs humping and the caption "Makin' bacon". Mom thought the shirt was cute but said okay if the school didn't like it. I don't think there was a brouhaha about freedom of speech over that.

It's a dress code violation, not a crime. The school ought to be able to deal with this without police involvement.

No crime was committed. I wonder if it truly was a dress code violation ...?

Remember the kid who was across the street from the school holding up an "inappropriate" sign? Supreme Court says OK for school to discipline him, bar such signs. Across the street.
