Security beefed up for "Glo Run" in National Harbor, MD (near DC)

WASHINGTON - Prince George's County Police will increase security Saturday night at the annual 5K Glow Run as a precaution after the Boston Marathon bombings on Monday. Police also warn to leave backpacks at home.

Police will be on the lookout for possible explosives and the entire course and other areas of concern will be swept by K-9 bomb-detecting dogs. More officers on patrol will be on hand.

Lt. Chris Price of the Prince George's county Police Special Operations Division advises to leave backpacks at home.

"There are no backpacks allowed in the event area," he says adding, "if we see someone around with a backpack, we are going to stop and talk to them and check it."

We live here but didnt participate however we did watch for a bit last night. There were a tremendous number of runners.. in the thousands. Not sure how many they expected but it seemed to be more than they could handle. The traffic was backed up for miles just getting into the parking areas.

Clearly security was beefed up. They were doing extra bag checks and police were patroling all around including a harbor police boat.

I suppose some might have been concerned people would not show up due to concerns about what happened in Boston but clearly that did not effect the event last night here.
