Czech foreign ministry advises geographically challenged Americans

The Czech Republic is not the same as chechnya!

"As more information on the origin of the alleged perpetrators is coming to light, I am concerned to note in the social media a most unfortunate misunderstanding in this respect,” Ambassador Petr Gandalovič wrote in a statement.

“The Czech Republic and Chechnya are two very different entities – the Czech Republic is a Central European country; Chechnya is a part of the Russian Federation,” he said."

I'd always heard that as credited to Ambrose Bierce, so I Googled it. I came up with a lot of results for both he and Twain. Then a page said neither was true, that the saying came from stand-up comedian Paul Rodriguez. Go figure.

there was a difference between Chechnya and The Czech Republic. I'm not horrible with European geography, but certainly not as good as I should be.

The word "Czech" was in the news this week. The town of West, Texas, was founded by mostly Germans and Czechs. They even have a place called the "Czech Stop" (it's a bakery.)

Also, Chechnya and Czech have a similar sound when spoken. I personally can't visualize what either country looks like and would still have to look at a map to find them. But, at least I do own a wall map (one of those upside down ones) and know where to start

since when Mexicans say "norteamericanos", they are not referring to themselves.
