America wants to help David Henneberry get a new boat.
The Watertown, Mass., resident became a hero when he discovered suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev hiding in his backyard boat.
Henneberry quickly called the cops and in a final standoff, his boat was riddled with bullet holes.
"That boat's his baby. He takes care of it like you wouldn't believe. And they told him it's all shot up," Henneberry's friend and neighbor George Pizzuto told ABC News. "He's going to be heartbroken."
Today, people around the country want to make help mend that broken heart.

(18,402 posts)Would you feel comfortable spending a summer afternoon in a boat that had been soaked with the blood of a suspected terrorist? I think not: Biz bag.

Yes, I'd keep the boat! Until someone made a good offer.

I'd bet the owner never sees that boat again.
I think he just got screwed.
This was a couple of evenings ago, maybe Friday, on the 6:30 (EDT) NBC news. Alas, no link.

(5,857 posts)Proper fixing of bullet holes could be $1,000 - $10,000 depending on the type of boat and where the bullet holes hit the hull. This assumes that there aren't any clusters which require a complete deck replacement.
That's for fiberglass -- I have no ideal what a wood boat repair would cost.

I think the suspect was already wounded before the cops showed up. The owner claimed to see blood, and that's why he called the cops. So I don't think the damage is all that bad.
If it was my boat, I wouldn't want any bullet holes fixed "perfectly". I'd want scars. Serviceable patches, but not "good as new".

(1,188 posts)lying on the floor bleeding, why did the police feel it was necessary to shoot the boat full of holes? Sounds to me like they were trying to kill the guy before he could removed from the boat and arrested.
Also, he should offer the boat for sale on eBay. I imagine there would be plenty of righties willing to pay big money for it.

(14,624 posts)Umm, because the suspect took shots at the police when they approached the boat?
Cops tend to get a little bit offended when terrorism suspects, with a history of bombing innocent women and children and throwing explosive devices at law enforcement, start shooting at them. Maybe it's just a character flaw?

(15,189 posts)Helping the victims of the bombing would be a better use of money than repairing some boat. Doesn't this guy get a reward? Doesn't he have homeowners insurance, or insurance on his boat. Poor man heart broken over a boat. He was lucky it wasn't his 8 year old that got killed.

(17,064 posts)Without seeing an "after" picture, I venture to guess that any damage is repairable. If peep want to take up a collection for reward money for the guy, that's great. But probably not necessary to fix boat.
