"the better angels of our nature"

"the better angels of our nature"

I've always appreciated that phrase penned by Lincoln.

Good leaders would always appeal to the "better angels" of the people, after 9-11 Bush led the campaign to appeal to the worst angels of our nature/s. He had lots of help, and it was frighteningly easy.

First responders, and the countless people who did everything they possibly could to help, exemplified the very best of human qualities. Of course they were hung out to dry in the end.

A bright window of human goodness often opens around disasters and tragedies. Of course Bush, Cheney and the media made sure the window was slammed shut.

Human beings contain many potentials. As Iraqis have just marked 10 years since the fall of Baghdad, lets remember our "better angels" because the appeals to the worst ones are almost always the loudest.
