Health Advocates Urge Congress: Enact Permanent SGR Reform without Shifting Costs--
--to People with Medicare
The U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means and the House Energy and Commerce Committee recently released a revised framework that would repeal and replace the Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula that calculates payments for Medicare providers. Working with coalition partners, including AARP, the National Council on Aging, the Center for Medicare Advocacy, AFL-CIO and others, Medicare Rights Center provided comments on the framework to ranking members of both committees, urging members of Congress to ensure that any attempt to repeal and replace the SGR adheres to three core principles:
Protect people with Medicare from cost shifting
Extend a permanent fix to critical Medicare benefits
Promote quality care and strengthen the primary care workforce
These joint letters implore members of Congress to enact a reformed payment system that provides economic stability and ensure access to high quality care for people with Medicare.
