(20,818 posts)It's more due to the twisted, distorted, hateful, very un-Christ-like interpretations of simple-minded men obsessed with power, control and sexism and not Christ himself.

I am an atheist. It is all mythology.

(2,475 posts)Religion is nothing more than a panacea for the simple minded and it works wonders for those seeking power. There is a book called The Medieval Underworld by Andrew McCall, which is worth reading as it shows how the church abused the minds of simpletons and the superstitious, not only to acquire enormous riches, but to foster hatred and prejudice, create wars and devastation and, amazingly enough, is still alive and well today. Instead if the Vatican read Southern Baptists. Worth a read. Enjoy

(2,475 posts)When the church was first being formed (the idea of a centralized church was very much against jesus's teachings to begin with) the pope, as a self designated descendent of St. Peter (or was it Paul? Who remembers this nonsense) placed himself above the laws of God by claiming that he had the final say in how those laws were interpreted. He therefore, in the eyes of the simpletons, became god himself. His words and threats of excommunication caused terror in the minds of those who truly believed in all nonsense and even had Kings groveling for forgiveness. Sad to say that this is still going on only instead of the pope we how have tv evangelists who, in their 3000$ suits and rolls royces, convince little old l ladies to hand over their social security checks in order to buy their way into heaven.

(103,856 posts)She has been "counseled" twice:
Once she was "caught" smoking in her car (she's 63).. that ended when she reminded them that the good Father so-and-so often bummed cigarettes from her
and again when her daughter (who was 24 at the time, and in the Air Force) had an out-of-wedlock child..
She laughed both off, but was a bit pissed at the intrusion

(20,818 posts)ever encountered southern Ohio, lol. It's like Mississippi-lite. Not to say that there aren't plenty of them in eastern Ohio, either, though.

(20,818 posts)mom is from southern Ohio. It was like going to a different state or even country altogether when we would visit her family in that area. It was a major reason why she left that part of the state and never went back, except for family visits and gatherings.

(20,818 posts)that welcome, accept and ordain GLBT individuals. The student body of the progressive, liberal social-justice-oriented seminary I attend is more than half GLBT, and the same is true for the faculty and staff, including at the highest administration levels. The type of people who'd fire this woman simply due to her sexual orientation would not be welcomed there, probably not even accepted in the first place.

(4,373 posts)this is the risk. I realize that teaching jobs are not always easy to get, but when you teach or attend a private school, they get to make the rules.

(640 posts)Honestly, the discrimination is just saddening and maddening. She was teaching at a private school so, yeah, they do have the "right" to let her go for whatever reason they choose, but this is just pure discrimination. And wrong.
