(8,020 posts)Interesting fact... 98% of US Catholic women have used contraception forbidden by their church. Another interesting fact... Catholic women in the US have a higher abortion rate than Protestant women. It almost seems like the Church is out of step with the faithful.... or perhaps vice-versa. Shouldn't the Church resolve this contradiction, rather than denying coverage for contraception. After all, coverage doesn't mandate use of any medical treatment. My health insurance covers contraception, but I don't use it. www.reuters.com/.../us-most-catholic-women-us-use-birth-cont- idUSTRE73D4SZ20110414 http://www.factcheck.org/2007/12/abortions-comparing-catholic-and-protestant-women/. Perhaps the Church should note what happened to the Komen folks when they enter the political arena.

(7 posts)"Interesting fact... 98% of US Catholic women have used contraception forbidden by their church".---false.
32% sterilization - it is forbidden to acquire sterilization to prevent contraception. It is not forbidden to have sterilization because of medical health reasons. 32% also includes male sterilization that may or may not have been acquired for medical reasons.
31% the pill - it is forbidden bvy the Catholic Church and is considered an aborificant
5%IUD - Though this number again is questionable as some doctors, institutions, and prescription companies do not fully inform that IUD's do not prevent pregnany in regards to stopping the egg from becoming fertilized. This has been a huge issue in the Church with many protestors on IUD's wanting proper information to be made available. Yes, IUD's are forbidden by the church as it is an aborificant.
15% condom - Is not prohibited by the Catholic Church and is not an aborificant.
4% Other - Unable to determine if it is or is not forbidden by the church. Value is 0 or even.
2% Natural Family Planning - Is not prohibited by the Catholic Church and is not an aborificant.
11% No Method - Is not prohibited by the Catholic Church and is not an aborificant.
The REAL NUMBER for Catholic women using contraception that is forbidden by the church, 36%. (I gave 1/2 of other to you)
"Another interesting fact... Catholic women in the US have a higher abortion rate than Protestant women". ---false.
-Forty-three percent of women over age 17 in the 2000-2001 survey said they were Protestant, while 27 percent said they were Catholic. --Alan Guttmacher Institute
"It almost seems like the Church is out of step with the faithful.... or perhaps vice-versa". --- false
Anti Catholic sentiment is simply out of touch with the Churches teachings
"Perhaps the Church should note what happened to the Komen folks when they enter the political arena".--- I'm not even sure what to say to this considering the Catholic Church has been the center of the political arena for thousands of years.

(7 posts)Wow - I COMPLETELY FORGOT!
The pill is not prohibited by the Catholic Church when it is not used to prevent pregnancy. Ill still let you all have the full 36%.
But in this study, it did not indicate weather or not these women were using the contraceptive pill to prevent pregnancy or for other reasons such as: pelvic inflammatory disease, dysmenorrhea, premenstrual syndrome, and acnereduce symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome, and decrease the risk of anemia.

(65,134 posts)Your cited references are clearly cherry-picking. And, they are "refutation" sources provided by the catholic church who clearly has a vested interest in deflecting the truth in this matter.
Nice try. Well actually, not.

The Pope's ruling was that condoms were okay when they were being used for disease prevention.
Not when they were being used as contraception.

and forcing insurance companies to do the right thing
Btw, it is Catholic 'organizations' that are affected, not the 'church'.
Anytime an organization becomes an employer then they have to play by the same rules as every other employer.

Manbaby?
As for the mb's accusation, if Obama is in support of women having the freedom to choose for themselves, you know the Catholic church will get it's collective panties in a wad (and I was born and raised Catholic, non-practicing since turning 18).

(36,649 posts)When the Catholic Church opens a hospital, they have to follow laws which apply to hospitals. When the Catholic Church opens a college or university, they have to follow laws which apply to colleges and universities. It's just as if they opened up a restaurant, they'd have to follow the laws which apply to restaurants.
These rules have nothing to do with The Church.

(7,904 posts)they keep pushing the boundaries of church/state trying to force more religion in politics and when someone says "hey wait a minute" they throw their arms up and start crying crocodile tears as if they are the ones being assaulted.
