Ex-Husker gets probation for faking anti-gay crime

LINCOLN -- A judge sentenced a former Nebraska women's basketball player to 24 months of probation, including seven days in jail, Thursday morning for faking an anti-gay hate crime.

Charlie Rogers had said she was attacked last July by three men who carved anti-gay slurs into her arms and stomach. She later was charged with filing a false report, a misdemeanor.

Rogers, who played for the Huskers from 1996 through 2000, pleaded no contest to the charge. Her attorney said Rogers maintains her innocence but didn't want a court fight. She was sentenced by Lancaster County Judge Gale Pokorny.

Rogers tearfully hugged family and friends after the sentence. She declined comment, as did her mother.
