Scan and frisk may be a better solution to urban gun violence

In Gun Battle, NYPD Blue Tests a New Technology

Last week, the NYPD acknowledged that it's been testing a new technology that will allow police to detect guns carried by criminals without using the typical pat-down procedures that have long been used. A scanner sitting within a truck or out on the street can detect terahertz radiation that's given off by human bodies or by inanimate objects. The T-rays, as they're sometimes known, pass through just about everything but metal. The NYPD said it's worked with the Department of Defense and the London Metropolitan Police on the technology.

"Basically, everyone emits terahertz radiation," Kelly said on Sunday about the process. "We've tested it. We've just received the latest prototype. It's too big for deployment in a reasonable way... But we're getting there. We're encouraged. We hope to be using it at least experimentally in the next six months."

Once a reinterpretation, then security like this nationwide can rid the streets of bullets and guns.

I 100% back this.

NO private citizen needs one bullet.
If every one is gotten rid of, the gun disabled, then the collectors can have it back to hang on their walls.

So they'll be measures terahertz radiation emitted by people and not propelling energy at then and watching it bounce like an x-ray. In a way its not that much different from public cameras.

On the other hand, I wonder if this is more like police walking around with long-distance microphones listening to people's conversations.

Brace new world.

Terahertz would be between microwaves and very long wavelength infrared. It is basically the low end of heat radiated by the body.

Not sure where that stands today in the courts (is a warrant required).

When you are out in public, you have no recourse about your picture being taken, so I think its use would hold up court. However monkey wrenching it will be quite easy, provided the tech is even allowed in court. It took DNA years to be considered suitable evidence so how long before THz is going to be considered sufficient probably cause.

I expect that Bloomie and others who profit from the machines will push this hard and do stupid things like trying to outlaw countermeasures like metallic clothing. Its what the 1%er and TPTB do.

Civil rights anyone?

5. It will work for about 90 days after the first court case
Thu Apr 18, 2013, 10:58 AM
Apr 2013

In it, the prosecutor will have to establish a legal basis for why it would constitute probable cause for a stop and frisk. During that portion of the trial, the entire tech would have to be laid out and its strengths and weaknesses discussed. After that countermeasures would immediately be created and even become stylish.

Also consider that cops are mostly tech stupid. They operate radar guns but have no idea how they work. The corps making and selling the machines will have to build the recognition into the machines. It will have a tolerable error rate in the demonstrations but will clear fail in the field.

Of course then Bloomie could try and ban metallic clothing.

BTW, who will your doppleganger be when either Christine Quinn or Hillary's associate husband Weiner becomes mayor in a few months?
Bloomberg will be continuing to oust all pro-NRA candidates.

Right on!

Modern security for the modern age.

Meanwhile how many children a day will continue to die?
35 a day from violence from guns. 50 a day gun suicides
100s injured
1000s of family members a day mourning

Thank God for Michael Bloomberg and Andrew Cuomo passing the toughest gun laws in the nation, adn Thank God the NRA lost big time yesterday, Thank God for Harry Reid not listening and that 60 instead of 50 is needed

Because the Cronyn amenment would have overturned NY/Calif/Ill tough gun laws.

Bloomie will be moved to the ash heap of history soon enough. His current position protects him from many criticisms. When just a private citizen I expect more 1%er shit from him and he will be further marginalized.

You can only buy so many votes before the people catch on.

the fatal flaw LaPierre made was going public himself (and he did so because none of the people he blackmailed would have said what he did.) Before he hid behind the curtain and dolled the illegal dollars.

The great thing about Bloomberg is-he is NOT running for any office after he leaves the mayor.

He is pure on this issue to all of America.

Of course those for guns and the NRA hate him.

But the strategic Time Magazine cover with Joe Biden and Gabbie Giffords clearly shows he is part of President Obama's team.

The NRA finally has met its match. He will dollar for dollar outspend them

And clearly, what President Obama said yesterday was known and written with 2014 and 2016 and 2018 and beyond.

Shame so many more kids will die or be wounded in the interim.

More legislation in years to come, will be on a NEW supreme court.
4 to 5 justices will change in the next 11 years.

Some wars take years.

After all, the NRA has had decades of lead time to do what they did.

If people are addicted to cigarettes, there is help for them.
If people are addicted to substances, they go to AA or rehab
If people are in cults, there are innerventions to save them

If no one had a gun, no gun would be used to kill or harm or accidentally do such.

We have a problem with violence in our society, though the numbers are going down while gun ownership is rising. Despite that, levels remain much higher in the black community and GLBTs are also more frequent targets. Address that and most self defense owners will stop carrying and buying weapons. Until then, a growing number of people are not going to give up their weapons nor vote for those who would take them away or restrict their utility.

Just because you do not like guns does not make them an addiction or a cult.

People who own/carry for self defense are not doing it because of the Mafia. Gay bashers and home invasions maybe but not because they are afraid of Tony Soprano's boys.

Shooting is in the winter and summer Olympic games. Deal with it.

I am much more radical. I think any consenting adults who want to enter into a legal marriage should be able to including polyandry. I think that churches should not be allowed to perform legal marriages, but people should be free to have any religious ceremony they want. That gets the churches out of being an agent of the state.

Not sure what you mean by 100% citizenship ASAP. The US has some of the most liberal citizenship laws in world, but they certainly could use some work.

I am much more radical that you have any clue.
