It's probably the first time I have heard it at an event and have not cringed

I like it as a group effort, too, but are you telling me you "cringed"

when Whitney Houston sang it?

I think Whitney would take issue with at least that part of your description, bringing,

as it does, an image of Heidi in the Alps.

But to each his own -- My husband never liked her style either.

Many people loved it, though, and It was a huge hit among the troops

who were, at the time, leaving to serve in the First Gulf War.

It was so popular, in fact, it was made into a best selling single.

My hometown - yes that is pretty much at every game I've been to in the last few years. Of course O Canada is easier to sing for us non-singers. And we tend to regard it more as a 'party song' and we definitely don't treat our national anthem with the same reverence as Americans treat theirs. It was a little bit strange the first time I went to a major league baseball game in the US and how everybody stood at attention with their hands over their hearts - so serious - when the anthem came on. It was an interesting difference in culture.
