Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) on Wednesday called the criticism he faced following an awkward speech at Howard University unfair.
Earlier this month, Paul asked the crowd at the historically black college if they knew that Republicans founded the NAACP. Audience members responded with a booming "Yes!" But Paul said Wednesday at a Christian Science Monitor breakfast that he thought the exchange was misreported. From the Huffington Post:
"That was misreported," Paul said. "I asked them, 'Do you know?' and I didn't know the answer. This is my first time to go to a historically black college."
"People say, 'Well, you should know the answer.' Well, that was part of the reason for going there, was I didn't know the answer," he said. "I said, 'Did they all know that the NAACP was founded by Republicans?' And in retrospect it sounds like it is a dumb question, but it's like, Republicans haven't been going to Howard for 20 years, so maybe by me going there I did learn something. And I did learn that everybody there knows, and I left there knowing that: Everybody there knows."
"It's unfair what the media tries to do to me on this," Paul added, according to the report. "I'm a little sensitive to some of it."

On Dec 13, 2012 Adam Lanza and his mother agreed with you, Rand Paul. On Dec 14, I'm pretty sure his mother didn't have time to rethink her position.

(37,160 posts)Rand,
You're the one who insisted your learning experience be in a public forum. There are simpler ways to discover what you don't know, but they involve taking the time and effort to actually engage people. Try listening. I know it's not a "family value" of yours, but it does work.

No, Senator, your half-assed revisionist history really can't stand up to a moment's scrutiny. Like other forms of masturbation, it should be kept private.

(15,381 posts)He's claiming he didn't know that the NAACP was founded by republicans? He asked the question in the manner of someone who knew the answer - as if he were trying to deliver a gotcha moment, and it backfired on him.

(14,624 posts)When I first watched a clip of his speech, I was confused. Seeing it a second time, it became obvious that he himself knew that the NAACP was founded by the pubbies, but he didn't think the students at Howard would know that.
Typical patronizing remark from that dumb ass! Who could have guessed that smart, ambitious young people attending a prestigious AA college would know the history of civil rights?!?

(9,748 posts)Sort of like when they tell Black people that Republicans ended slavery. Yeah, I'm pretty sure they already know that. And don't give a shit because that was 150 years ago while you have done nothing but shit on them for the past 40 years.

(138 posts)Enough said.
sad part is the Conservatives actually believe that they are the party of civil rights.
They forget an awful lot of recent history to contort themselves into that position.
When they trot out Herman Cain and Dr. Ben Carson as examples of their color blind nature, they scratch their heads and wonder why 1865 isn't more relevant than today. And why Herman Cain didn't result in an avalanche of new African american Republicans
