"...pressure cookers with metal and ball bearings. ?

Are they referring to the kind of cooker I have in my pantry, or something else? If so, it would have been pretty large for a backpack. How would it have been detonated?

One scary thought, at home you got all you need to make a bomb, you also got what is needed for low grade mustard gas.

You can find instructions on how to on the www.

Oh and to the folks in the gub'mint who will read this... Fuck Hoover.

it makes no difference with rice

I lived in and around Vail Colorado for ~15 years and was in the restaurant business, in the kitchen mostly, for the entire time. I also have an AOS in culinary arts, trust me.

according to a UK article I read. If they were set off via cell phone, they could have been planted hours before.

I was curious as to how the pressure would have been contained that long, but the husband said it was probably a chemical reaction, not steam, which first came to mind from my experience in the kitchen.

http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/15/us/boston-marathon-investigation/index.html

(CNN) -- One of the deadly Boston Marathon bombs was apparently placed inside a metal pressure cooker and hidden in a backpack, a federal law enforcement official said Tuesday.

A timer was likely used to activate one of the bombs, rather than a cell phone, another law enforcement official said.

Details began to emerge as investigators combed through shreds of evidence in what Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis called "the most complex crime scene that we've dealt with in the history of our department."

No question. These things were planted between the time the winners crossed and when they went off. They were set by timer, probably after the winner crossed.

That they are holding tremendous pressures or any pressure at all. It's a strong container that would fragment more or less evenly, allowing the explosion to expand and carry shrapnel in all directions rather than being channeled (as can happen with, say, a pipe). Ideally you would want the projectiles (nails smeared with feces, BBs, coins, whatever) packed around the explosive, and the entire thing contained in something that would basically shatter once the pressure grew too great.

In my inexpert opinion.
