Johnson County pays more to feds than it gets back, but not urban and rural areas

http://www.kansascity.com/2013/04/13/4180563/johnson-county-pays-more-to-feds.html

"Johnson County’s outsized tax burden is easily explained — it’s one of the wealthiest counties in America, and the nation’s progressive income tax system snags some of that cash.

But federal spending is relatively low in highly populated Johnson County, too. Because its population is younger and healthier than in other parts of the metro area, federal spending on Social Security and Medicare is lower than in other counties.

That may change as baby boomers and their children grow old. Suburban communities like Johnson County have relied for decades on housing churn — younger couples with school-aged children buying homes from the elderly, who then move somewhere else — but there are signs the Great Recession has stopped that cycle.

That suggests federal spending in Johnson County could explode in the years ahead, narrowing the margin between taxes and expenditures.
