As you know, General Electric is the #1 locomotive manufacturer in the US, and their locomotive works in Erie is a thriving plant that supplies large domestic demand and exports as well.
They recently built a non-union plant in Ft Worth Texas, and the PR not long ago was that it was not intended to replace the Erie Pa one, but to satisfy extra demand. Well it sure didn't take long to change their tune and now they want wage cuts to keep 950 jobs in Erie Pa

My guess is whether they accept concessions or adopt a "full pay to the last day" stance won't really matter, GE is going to move the whole kit and caboodle to a right to work for less state and doubtless planned this a while back.
So now the race to the bottom has finally hit the last bastions of US heavy industry that are still successful: Aircraft and Locomotives. Doing well isn't good enough to prevent concessions and an eventual race to the bottom.
"Job Creators" my ass.

(13,257 posts)...we're going to have to hit rock bottom before anything changes. For every step we take forward we take two steps back.
The only real question is whether this slow slide is better than a sudden crash. At least if it were sudden we could start putting things back together sooner.

(5,364 posts)The sudden crash can't be long in coming. Anybody can see that even this is just another delaying action. Who will the corporatists blame for the reason that they eventually move even the non-union Texas work out of the country. Will the former realize what the end game was?
