(28,581 posts)A neighbor brought her to me when she was a couple weeks old. She just had empty sockets. The vet told me that the mother probably had feline herpes.
She was an awesome kitty and got around just like any other kitty except no jumping. She would race across the house and pounce on our feet.
She lived about 5 months and then suddenly started having horrific, horrific seizures. After 24 hours a vet agreed to come in (it was a weekend) and put her down for us. Such a hard day.
I'm glad we were able to give her 5 months of happiness at least.
RIP Oracle.

isn't blind, but she was near starvation when I found her. It was autumn, and she was so raggedy and skinny that there was no way she would make it through winter. The other cats picked on her, too. I started feeding the cats, and it didn't take a month before she leaped into my lap when I knelt down to put food.
Her imploring green eyes, the fact that the other cats picked on her, and yes, the fact that my heart melted when she leapt into my lap made her mine.
I've had her for over five years, and I adore her. She's a winter foot-warmer at the end of my bed, a mousetrap that couldn't be out-engineered, and a playful friend that is always up for grabbing paper and plastic contraptions out of the air and hauling then around like a tiger.
I absolutely adore her, and she is my best friend.
I went through all kinds of stages - first, I offered her a cat bed for the winter, and built her a house out of foam insulation under the picnic table (I know, but it was there, and it could be pressed up against the eaves to provide additional warmth with the insulation).
The next winter, I built her a more elaborate cat house with a better bed, and better insulation that included a trap door she could go in and out of.
Well, she never needed them on the next winters, because she's a big fat happy house cat, now .

(39,961 posts)She has made me a better person, I think, too, just by me loving my cat and she loves me . I've built all kinds of things for her to make her feel safe, and they were projects that I needed to do, and things she needed.
We needed each other as friends
I said it before, and I'll say it again when I found her: What do you give a lonely soul? Another lonely soul.
That's when she and I found each other and I helped her through the winter, and she was joyous and helped me though a winter in my heart. She's a great cat.
I do wish she would quit deciding to play with my feet at 5am, but she's an incredibly reliable alarm clock. I think she hears the coffee pot go off and decides it's time to wake the food dispenser up by abusing her feet.

(39,961 posts)She's the best I've had since I lost my Doberman Pinscher. He was a childhood prince of a dog. Best anyone could ask for.

(39,961 posts)Her personality is so overwhelming, I couldn't love her more than if she was a show cat. She is lovely on the inside, if that makes sense. I absolutely love her, and she is FUN. Sometimes I think I'm too old to enjoy it so much.
Okay, I'm not to old, and I'm built a lot younger than my years, but I feel very immature and stupid and goofy when I play with her in the backyard. She's great for taking about 30 years off of my personality when I throw balls and feathered things .

(39,961 posts)to say that certain pets make you a better person? I think they can. My cat has made me a whole lot more compassionate because she was so decrepit when I found her, but now she flourishes.
She gave me some hope that no matter how abused or starved something could be, they could become beautiful beings. It knocked my cynicism down about a hundred notches.

(50,566 posts)When I was young, a family friend asked my mom the her secret of raising kind, well-behaved, "good" kids. (Okay, we've changed since then but my sister and I were "nice" in our youth. ) My mom said she thought a lot of it had to with the fact that we'd always had a lot of cats (and many other animals, but the cats were the favorites and the constants, and we rescued many). We'd learned early on to love and care for innocent creatures who depended on us to be kind to them.
