Mitch McConnell Hit With Ethics Complaint Over Leaked Ashley Judd Tape
The Huffington Post | By Paige Lavender Posted: 04/11/2013 1:13 pm EDT
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has been hit with an ethics complaint after a leaked tape revealed he was discussing with aides how to take on potential opponent Ashley Judd.
The Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has asked the Senate ethics committee and the FBI to investigate whether McConnell was having a discussion about potential Judd weaknesses -- including her mental health and religion -- on government time.
Using taxpayer-funded resources to pay staffers to dig up dirt on political opponents isnt just an ethics violation, its a federal crime, said CREW Executive Director Melanie Sloan. As Sen. McConnell requested, the FBI is investigating the recording. A thorough and fair investigation necessitates the bureau also inquire into whether Sen. McConnell himself violated the law.
Mother Jones first reported on the leaked tape, which was reportedly recorded at a Feb. 2 meeting. Shortly after the leak, the McConnell campaign said it was working with the FBI.

(10,270 posts)If that happens, the Idiot Brigade will complain it's just more Big Government machine-ing, (probably at the Order of the White House, no doubt), and how the FBI is engaged in a Witch Hunt.

And there's no doubt in my mind how he will piss and moan about being the poor victim here.
And BTW ... McConnell is living proof of what a cross between and turtle and a weasel looks like.

(28,498 posts)He believes this "bugging" was the work of the "political left" just like Watergate!
Apparently he hasn't heard the LBJ tapes that provide undisputed evidence that Watergate was the work of GOPers wanting to grab the evidence that Nixon conspired with South Vietnam to abandon LBJ's peace talks.

(75,480 posts)I hope we get more of these revealing moments from the elected members of the Reptilian Party in the future. It may be the only way we get the stranglehold of Big Business out of our government. We have to expose their bought and paid for politicians for the tools that they are and the people who can do it are the ones with cell phones who are sitting in on the meetings where these things are happening.

(12,233 posts)The Republican posters are upset that the office may have been bugged. They don't understand that a representative cannot use Govt offices, people, or time on campaigning. They would have to be in a campaign office, and any staff that was working on the campaign would have to do it on their "off time" from the office. The Republican posters don't understand that it is illegal what McConnell was doing at a "govt office". They don't understand what the actual ethics violation and FBI investigation is even about.
Also, there is no report that shows the office was bugged like some nefarious White Water break in/ sting. They are blaming the FBI for doing their job.

(171,065 posts)GiveMeFreedom. I just find it ironic the man and party who so espouses 'small government' had to get the big bad FBI government guys involved; small gov't is good until they need help, then all bets are off. But of course it's also a distraction because of what he was involved in doing on the federal dime, and that would be to take Judd down by any means necessary, also a no-no, at least on the gov't dime. I'm happy CREW is paying attention.

(136 posts)After reading the posts, if the reported ethics complaint finds evidence of violation of Senate rules and criminal violations, does this create a possibility that Ms. Judd would possibly have grounds for a civil suit?
I know there is a common perception that when it comes to investigating themselves, the House and Senate generally find the most minimum level of response. This usually involves a strongly worded letter that could leave hurt feelings, and possibly a monetary fine.
