I don't thing we will see a huge turnaround this year as a result of Obama's policies. A number of banks could take another dump... Obama doesn't want to go after them because they are too big too prosecute. Obama doesn't sound very FDRish to me.

(18,998 posts)This is what FDR did in the first year....less than a year actually sense he took office on March 4.
March 4
FDR inaugurated the 32nd president of the U.S. "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself."
March 5
FDR issues a proclamation declaring a four-day "bank holiday" throughout the nation effective March 6. All banking transactions stop and embargo on exportation of gold, silver, and currency. Summons Congress to special session for March 9.
March 9-June 16
"Hundred Days" session FDR gets a willing Congress to enact many of the New Deal programs. This first day Congress passes the Emergency Banking Act, giving FDR broad powers over banks and foreign exchange. Bank holiday ends March 10--banks can reopen when they prove that they are solvent. Within three days, 1000 banks will reopen and national confidence picks up.
March 12
FDR gives first "fireside chat".
March 31
Congress passes the Reforestation Relief Act, establishing the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC); it provides work immediately for 250,000 young men (18-25) in reforestation, road construction and developing national parks. Work camps begin to spring up. By the time it eases in 1941, two million people have worked on its projects.
April 19
FDR takes the nation off of the gold standard.
May 12
Congress passes the Federal Emergency Relief Act, which authorizes immediate grants to states for relief projects. Unemployment has reached 14 million-over one quarter of the nation's work force.
Roosevelt signs the Agricultural Adjustment Act to provide immediate relief to farmers by setting prices for agricultural products and paying subsidies to farmers for curtailing production of certain crops that were in surplus.
May 18
Congress establishes the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to construct dams and power plants along the Tennessee Valley; electricity will go to residents, many of whom lacked it previously, and fertilizer will be sold.
May 27
Congress passes the Federal Securities Act to monitor and regulate stocks and bonds.
June 6
Congress passes the National Employment System Act.
June 13
Congress passes the Home Owners Refinancing Act to provide mortgage money and other aid to homeowners. It will go out of business in June 1936 after providing loans for some one million mortgages.
June 16
The final day of the "Hundred Days" session. Congress passes the National Industrial Recovery Act (NIRA) establishing the Public Works Administration (PWA) and the National Recovery Administration (NRA).
The PWA is authorized to supervise the construction of roads, public buildings and other projects while providing employment. Secretary of the Interior Harold Ickes is tapped to head the PWA.
The NRA's goal is to stimulate competition and benefit producers and consumers by implementing various codes to establish fair trade. Compliance was to be voluntary; those who cooperate received the blue eagle "seal of approval." NRA is to be directed by General Hugh Johnson. It will be declared unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in May 1935.
Congress also passes the Farm Credit Act and the Banking Act of 1933 (which establishes FDIC).
August 5
FDR establishes by executive order, the National Labor Board to enforce the right of collective bargaining.
November 8
FDR establishes by executive order the Civil Works Administration (CWA) to provide work for some four million unemployed over the winter months. It ceases operation in March 1934.
December 5
The 21st Amendment goes into effect, repealing the 18th Amendment and ending prohibition.

(11,464 posts)everyone of course has different wedge issues pertaining to the era
but it shouldn't be a contest between 3 of the greatest top 4 presidents ever.
All are equally great. (lincoln is of course #1).
Hilarious thing is- imagine if President Obama called for a 4 day bank holiday.
There would be a run on banks and the NRA gun nuts would shoot up the nation
But I think one can step by step say President Obama is equal to FDR
(only someone who really hates Obama could say otherwise IMHO)
please note-on the list above, it includes lists CONGRESS PASSING ITEMS
ahem, that is not part of FDR's accomplishment, that is the congress.
One can only imagine if President Obama had the congress FDR had he would have had
16,234 other things done already too.

(18,998 posts)For instance in just a few months after taking office he started the CCC and put millions of unemployed to work for the first time in a long while....and the work they did is still with us today and we are still benefiting from it.
Just think if Obama had done that in the first year...
And that is not all....he created the TVA...another thing that is with us today....until it is sold of to private people that is...which they want to do.
Did Obama do or even purpose to do anything even close to one of those?...just think what a CCC could have done for us with the 800 billion that he gave to stimulate the economy?....where did all that go anyway?...not to people that needed it for sure.
FDR won the election and he knew it and used it...Obama has won twice now, and still has to give our gains away and get nothing in return.

(11,464 posts)Health care to me was the #1 issue, and he did very well.
And all the social issues.
Just the simple fact that President Obama is black has given hope to every single minority group besides the first 43 who were one, that they too can grow up to be President.
Before Jackie Robinson for instance, that dream was not open to others in baseball, here it is the same.
That accomplishment is the single most important accomplishment any person could have undertaken, hopefully to be followed by the first woman president.
Sometimes people forget how historic that is, being that Thomas Jefferson said all men are created equal (but leaving out all minorities and all women.)
That fact alone is of utmost importance as the Democratic party that would be 82% of the party.
Naming TWO female Supreme Court Justices, two of the best and brightest in Court history.
Gay equality is going to happen on President Obama's term.
and the 100s of other things.
but again, its not a competition and I rank FDR #2 so that is 2 places better as of now.
The OP was written as a negative to President Obama, so that made this thread a competition.
It shouldn't be.
FDR would be extremely proud of President Obama as Ted Kennedy was.
Remember the direct arrow from Lincoln-FDR-LBJ-Carter-Obama-Hillary
one feeds into the other
Barack Obama brought us out of a depression, same as FDR did.
Two equals.
Wish all the super greats could be in one room together. That would make some great photo.
Would love to be in that room.
And with 2 from Obama and 2 from Hillary, one should wait til the end of Hillary's term,
because by dotting every I and crossing every T, it ensures forever.

(18,998 posts)And what we needed was single payer...Medicare for all would have been so simple...just lower the age of eligibility to 25 or something...everything else was already in place.
But we could not have that...it was taken off the table from the start to compromise with the GOP...and what we got 3 years later was a mandate that everyone buy private insurance....now who do you think that benefited?
But if all you are looking for is records you will get them I am sure....first black, first woman, first gay...and on and on...and that will satisfy you....while the strip not only the New Deal, but the constitution as well....cause the PTB don't give a shit about records they want the money...and they are getting it big time....while ordinary people get their standard of living lowered still further to pay for it all.
I guess eventually it will all be turned into a reality TV show...that should keep the proles occupied and happy in their sweat shops.
I'm sorry....he had me until now...I was making excuses for him all over the place...but now that he no longer needs our vote the truth is coming out and I will not buy the excuses any more....and I will not make them anymore.

(11,464 posts)Getting rid of preexisting, making unlimited lifetime(that is so important but most people don't realize.
Take Christopher Reeve-he had a million dollar cap I think, and he spent it the first week in the hospital, luckily he had very good friends who helped out, and doctors picked up the cause and bills as time went on.
If nothing got passed, it never would have changed.
I for one have already saved $19,200 the next 11 months as will self-employed
and everybody will have better options in 2014.
Why would anyone deny that?
zeemike
(18,998 posts)Now that they have the mandate that all buy insurance from private companies all they need to do is get the congress to delete the things they don't like...and it benefits them really good...then the CEOs will get hundreds of millions in bonuses and pay.
And that will be so easy once the GOP controls the house and senate after 2014 because democrats felt sold out again....and even before we get a GOP president in 16 Obama will have to compromise again and give them what they want....cause the GOP has a mandate.
I am a gullible and naive person actually....but eventually I see the game and stop being played.
graham4anything
(11,464 posts)And by 2016, everyone will see the benefits.
Most will already see the benefits in Nov. 2014
And then you will see all citizens rebel agianst the republicans if they attempt to take it away, so they won't take it away
You got things so backward.
It is truly going to be 80-20

(18,998 posts)Not that law about pre existing conditions...that is just regulations....and the devil is in those regulations or lack of them.
The insurance companies don't want to change that part....who would turn down a guaranteed market for your product...and they can tweak the regulations of it to suit themselves...as big business always does....with campaign contributions and other considerations.
Just watch what happens when we get a GOP controlled Senate...they will claim a mandate and pass what they want...attached to bills that Obama must sigh or have a good reason that he had to.

I for one would hope there are zero debates. Debates are a waste of time.
Remember when Gore ran in 1988 with zero chance of winning, he gave the public and the republicans the issue of Willie Horton. And that was the end of Dukakis.
Last thing needed is negativity against any democratic candidate.
After all, all will be standing, their arms clasped with President Clinton, hoping to get a little photo op time.

(11,464 posts)he copied almost exactly the techniques that Republicain Mayor Rudy Mr. 9-11 Giuliani did.
Remember Benie Kerik and William Bratten who instigated those systems which were like a protoype of the system used in the Dark Knight movie of tracking and tracing?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_O'Malley
During his first mayoral campaign, OMalley focused on a message of reducing crime. In his first year in office, O'Malley adopted a statistics-based tracking system called CitiStat, modeled after Compstat, a crime management program first employed in the mid-1990s in New York City. The system logged every call for service into a database for analysis. The Washington Post wrote in 2006 that Baltimore's "homicide rate remains stubbornly high and its public school test scores disappointingly low. But CitiStat has saved an estimated $350 million and helped generate the city's first budget surplus in years."[22] In 2004, CitiStat accountability tool won Harvard University's "Innovations in American Government" award.[23] The system garnered interest from Washington, D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty[22] as well as crime officials from Britain.[24]
While running for governor in 2006, O'Malley said violent crime in Baltimore declined 37% while he was mayor. That statistic came from an audit of crime that used questionable methodology and became the subject of controversy; O'Malley was accused by both his Democratic primary opponent Doug Duncan and his Republican opponent Gov. Bob Ehrlich of manipulating statistics to make false claims. The Washington Post wrote at the time that "no evidence has surfaced of a systemic manipulation of crime statistics," but that "there is no quick or definitive way for O'Malley to prove his numbers are right

(11,464 posts)I never heard of this guy, so I did a one second look into him
That is the trouble with unheard of, unvetted people.
There are so many things no one ever heard of.
That is how everyone was tricked by John Edwards.
It's odd though, because so many do not like NYC Mayors, but the worst of the worst mayor was rudy Giuliani and the methods used by Giuliani & Kerik were not something the vast majority of the democratic party agrees with.
It's one thing when one is just a mayor or governor.
But it's another to run for President. Rudy found that out himself.
BTW, from what it appears under that system is, people are arrested for small crime
and taken away.Or moved into a different town/borough like happened, then the crime is hidden.
That is how Rudy did it.Moved the crime to the outskirts and made sure the papers did not find out about it. Bratten was the cop that trained that terroristic Dorner guy in California I think.
madinmaryland
(64,931 posts)Dorner?
You have cherry picked one program that he had in the mid 90's which according to your own earlier post was a crime recording system.
BTW, do you remember the early 90's in New York City and even the late 80's in NYC?? I assume you were way too young to remember those days or have even been to NYC.
graham4anything
(11,464 posts)was there more than a couple of decades earlier too
Why the ad hominem to me?
I used to ride the subways in the 1970s after work in late hours, the worst of stereotypical times in NYC when Abe Beame was mayor.
Never once bothered.
BTW, if you look quick you could see me in the Taxi Driver movie up in Columbus Circle scene when Palladin was speaking.
Cherrypicked?
Are you saying he is embarassed by that so it should be hidden?
Sheesh.
That is why I would never vote for an unvetted candidate.
If I, Joe Nobody could find it in 1/2 of a second, imagine what Roger Stone would do with it.
BTW, the city in Rudy's age was one of police doing the rioting while Rudy was AG.
Thank God Rudy was replaced by a good guy. Rudy actually got the election of 2001 postponed you know.
As for Bernie Kerik, well, haven't kept up much with his wereabouts.
Bratten went to California and think Bernie went to jail, though I might be mistaken.
BTW-in the late 70s, early 1980s, used to work in the actual World Trade Center buildings.
You know, the actual buildings that the 9-11 terrorists helped to bring down
where about 3000 actual people died, including hundreds of actual hardworking union men and women.
In fact, all of the firemen and policemen who died on 9-11 were good hardworking union workers who never once thought of their own life, attempting to save others.
Do you remember when Rudy's agitating caused a Black kid to be beaten with a baseball bat in Brooklyn in one of the biggest racist cases of the time?
Thank God for the Rev. Al Sharpton back then.
(and thank God for Al Sharpton now on MSNBC, the one and only political show I watch anymore.

This is over the top.
You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Apr 11, 2013, 12:38 PM, and the Jury voted 2-4 to LEAVE IT.
Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Perhaps the author of this frivolous alert should stick to hanging out in the BOG.
Juror #2 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Borderline. Certainly very hard-hitting, and I don't particularly like the "BHO" abbreviation, but I see the point the poster is making.
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Disagreeing with your opinion is not 'over the top'. This is a political discussion board, so discuss, and stop trying to suppress everything you don't like.
Juror #4 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: Flamebait.
Juror #6 voted to HIDE IT and said: I'm glad this stupidity was alerted. I'll vote to hide, even though I predict a 5-1 vote to leave.
Thank you very much for participating in our Jury system, and we hope you will be able to participate again in the future.
Every critical post is being alerted on and I suspect that it is a coordinated effort. Fortunately, the liberal majority remains.

(14,881 posts)and I have no problem in giving the GOP hope that going after this will swing voters their way. In fact, I'm hoping it will go so far that they propose lifting the cap on SS in order to beating the DEMS to get credit for it.
But it doesn't explain his Monsanto pick to head food safety, some of his other equally awful picks, gutting LIHEAP (unless that gets as much attention as Chained CPI, but after earlier cuts and with oil costs so high, it really is essentially already gutted).
In the meantime, I intend to make as much noise as I can. And I am concerned that this will hurt Dem prospects of increasing the senate hold and taking back the house in 2014. As someone wrote the other day, daddy is gambling the rent money. If the cuts to SS and gutting LIHEAP were head fakes, they were very risky ones. And it doesn't sound like Axlerod was very well prepared for the pushback.
