(149,611 posts)we need to get them out from under that ridiculous funding requirement for future health care costs. That's what's really killing them.

(51,076 posts)What I do is on the ones that have a return address on the envelope is take a magic marker and write refused, return to sender. I asked our postmaster how to stop all the junk mail I was getting and this is what he suggested. He said that if it has a return address on it the post office has to return it and the business or person who sent it to you has to pay the postage, same postage as if you or I mail a letter not the cut rate price some businesses get. I'll go from getting several junk letters per day to none in the matter of a few weeks. I just did this a couple weeks ago and now I'm getting maybe one or two junk pieces of mail a week and I'm sure they'll stop once they realize they owe postage. If they don't pay the postage the post office will suspend the use of their services until they do. It works and I've been using this trick for close to 20 years now. Happy very little junk mail man

(9,213 posts)I'll have to give that a try. I asked my postman about doing this once about 10 years ago and he said if it is something that is obviously an advertisement then they just shred them at the post office and don't return them, so I guess i'm not sure if it's the truth or not but it's worth a shot.

(51,076 posts)I don't think a post office can legally shred anything except maybe a flyer from a local store that is not addressed to a person. I was told that if it has a return address they are required by law to return it and the person or company who sent it are required to pay the postage for that return trip. Our post office doesn't even have a dumpster
