Santorum To Gay Man: You Don’t Deserve ‘Privilege’ Of Marriage ...

Rick Santorum told a gay man in Fulton, Missouri Friday afternoon that he didn’t deserve the “privilege” of marriage because his same-sex relationship does not “benefit” society in the same way that opposite-sex marriage does. Marriage, Santorum explained is an “intrinsic good” in which gay and lesbian people should not be allowed to partake in:

SANTORUM: You’re not entitled “to special treatment under the law…(Marriage is) not a right, (...) It is an intrinsic good…And as a result of that, we extend a privilege. We extend certain privileges to people who do that because we want to encourage that behavior. (...)

Two people who may like each other or may love each other who are same-sex, is that a special relationship? Yes it is, but it is not the same relationship that benefits society like a marriage between a man and a woman.

Humans have rights, excluding LGBT persons is actually the "special treatment" and highly abusive.

I suppose polygamists are more intrinsic in their goodness by your definition. You are still failing Santorum.

In fact, I was sterilized (twice) by the time I got married. My marriage is a sham and is destroying society! I blame on Teh Gay Agenda. Or maybe Teh Gay Attaché.

Old people should not be allowed to marry. There is no intrinsic good.

People sterile by nature or choice should not be allowed to marry. There is no intrinsic good.

We'll be married nineteen years this September. No babies, now or ever, unless you count two uncivilized Maine Coons and a chocolate Labrador Retriever.

Our grandparents' marriage had no "intrinsic good", either. They married after the kids from previous marriages grew up and moved out.

What "intrinsic good" has Rick Santorum's marriage brought to society?

Frothman will probably do quite well in SW Missouri. Scores of my fundevangelical fellow SW Missourians love what Frothman stands for. What difference does it make if marriage benefits society or not? In Frothman's mind, does a childless marriage benefit society in the same way a marriage that produces 10 kids does? Does a marriage that lasts a few days and weeks benefit society, and if it does, does it do so in the way? Marriage is a partnership between two people, and many societal benefits are attached to marriage. Should our counties, or states, or cities do a cost-benefit analysis of each marriage, to make sure the benefits for society are sufficient to allow the marriage contract to be accepted?

What Frothman says here is stupid, meaningless and devoid of thought and reflection as usual.

rick santorum comes from a family with an admirable history of fighting facists - as communists and anarchists no less, yet he has been drawn into the mindframe and worldview of the people his family risked their lives defeating.

It is the Catholic religion which gets in the way. To use a straight marriage as an example if a couple, Catholic OR NOT, is divorced and remarried, they are NOT married according to the Catholic Church. The couple are living in sin and guilty of Adultery, even with a signed and sealed civil marriage contract. Marriage is for LIFE, unless an ANNULMENT is granted declaring the first marriage never existed. Would any state in the Union recognize a second, or third, fourth, civilially remarried couple? Of course. The Santorums, and their religious right wingers, won't. These couples, Catholic or not, who are LEGALLAY married by the courts, are not in their eyes.

Can you see why they would be so vehementally against a CIVIL Gay Marriage?
