"Democrats, however, were mostly mum on news that Obama is willing to deal on chained CPI.
Senate Budget Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-Wash.) offered a cold response to the presidents decision to include the language in his budget.
We did not include it in our budget, and I will have to wait and see the details of how hes written it, she said.
She wouldnt go so far to say that it could get any support among Senate Democrats.
I dont know until I see it, Murray said.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) also was unenthusiastic, ignoring questions about whether chained CPI could receive support from Democrats.
We worked until 5 oclock in the morning the last day we were here before the break, Reid said, referring to the all-night budget process the Senate held in March. We have our budget. It was passed. Its a good budget. The budget sets our priorities, I think, and the priorities of the American people and the Democrats. The president has his budget.
Liberal Iowa Democratic Sen. Tom Harkin said he remains opposed to chained CPI.
I dont think Im alone on this, Harkin said. There are a lot of progressives that share my view on this, that chained CPI is a nonstarter.
