News Corp. exec threatens to make Fox subscription-only

Speaking at the opening session of the National Association of Broadcasters' annual trade show here today, Chase Carey, chief operations officer of News Corp., said that his broadcast network, Fox, will change its business model to ensure it gets paid for TV content it produces, if the courts and the politicians in Washington don't protect its current revenue model. Specifically, he said that Fox and other broadcasters may require a subscription model for its broadcast TV service.

Works for me. Let the whole thing be that way.

I'm not sure I care about anything on the TeeVee but it would be nice to get the science and history type channels and not have to pay more to subsidize the sports channels.

I don't know what the basic fee would be just to deliver programming - any programming to me but this is one area I think ala carte would be beneficial.

I'm not quite sure why though. I mean I don't have cable, but I get the local Fox affiliate because it's an over the air network. I don't get Fox News because it's a cable station. That isn't effected by the case in question.

There is another story in GD. They're not talking about requiring individuals to subscribe. They're trying to stop a company who is using over-the-air signals as its "product," selling the signal for $10/mo to people who don't want to spend $150 a month for cable.

Clearly they are not. They are in the propaganda business, and we all know it. They're not going to do anything that jeopardizes their REAL revenue model.

We are liable to see more over the air stations and networks headed this way too. Ad rates for OTA broadcasters are in the toilet and have been for about the last 3-4 years. It's getting to the point where "free" OTA tv is no longer a viable business model. It costs more to operate a lot of TV stations than ad revenue can bring in,no matter how many spots they run.

As far as I know, there's no way to make a broadcast signal that can be received by subscription only. But at one point, the article seems to be saying they will stop broadcasting entirely and become a premium cable and satellite channel. And at another, it seems to be saying their will charge their own local affiliates subscription fees for broadcasting their programs.

Does anybody have a clearer idea of what is really being proposed?
