Why is Thatcher called Baroness?

Her father was a grocer and she worked in his store. How did she go from clerk to Baroness?
What I think of her is more of a opportunist. She came from the working class and shit on the working class when she had the power.

I don't know if it was a life peerage, meaning her eldest son won't inherit the title, or if it was an outright one, but I suspect the former. It's the same as knighting Paul McCartney.

Remember, royalty chooses its aristocrats.

I couldn't find anything on a quick google, but I think it's a knighthood thing.

which allowed her to run for Parliament and be called Baroness. No clue how she got it---cash probably changed hands!

As well as her, earlier PMs who have include Callaghan, Wilson, Hume (who gave up a hereditary title to stand for election, so he could be PM, but was given a life peerage after he retired), Macmillan (who was given a rare hereditary one), Eden and Attlee - so that includes 3 Labour PMs.

Yes, she did shit on the working class, by and large - or, at least, the bits of the working class she didn't like.

the British House of Lords. I don't make the rules for the British peerage. That's just the way it was/is.
I didn't much care for her politics, but that is why she is referred to as "Baroness".

After being Prime Minister, she got knighted, joined the House of Lords, and was given land and the title of Baroness.

Long story told quickly. In 1990 her husband got a title of nobility that goes to his heirs. In 1992 she was given a title of nobility that terminates with her.
