I am a bit unnerved by the latest jobs numbers myself.
We NEED a real jobs bill STAT.
"Unemployment fell to 7.6 percent in March from 7.7 percent in February, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. But that was mainly due to 496,000 people leaving the labor force completely. The labor-force participation rate -- the percentage of people eligible to be working or looking for work -- fell to 63.3 percent, the lowest since 1979".

(27,461 posts)I agree about the jobs bill, but it seems futile even to think about it. We don't even have the power to undo the sequester, which is an anti-jobs bill.
(Yours was first, so not really "jinx" but close)

(10,960 posts)The payroll tax holiday expiration and the sequester were both anti-jobs moves.
Simple reversing those two moves would be more of a jobs bill than we are going to get.

(1,565 posts)That alone translates to an excessive amount of misery in the real world.
I am just appalled that our leadership in DC have utterly ignored the issue of employment.

(5,937 posts)All things considered I have no disposable income. Shelter, transportation and food take all of it and I'm single. It has to be much worse for families with dependents. I have nothing left to stimulate the economy with.

(22,845 posts)My own family is having a tough time finding work.
I've been unable to find work in 4 1/2 years. One of my daughters is been looking and getting nowhere. The other daughter is waitressing part time and says people are tipping very little. My husband has a job but has been looking to change jobs since October. He hasn't even had a single interview. In the past it usually took him no more than a month to find a new job.
And we live in the DC metro area, in Maryland, which is said to have a low unemployment rate. I hate to think what it's like in other states if Maryland is supposedly doing so well.

(39,345 posts)the long-term of the economy, the more I'm convinced I made the right decision.
I was laid off for the last time in 2008. Could not find another job in that industry if I advertised naked on a billboard. Oh and as a bonus I turned 50 last year.
Last year I went to culinary school to get training as a professional cook. But I didn't stop there. This year, I'm in the business incubator and am building my own food business. It is local and does not depend on bank financing. I sell my wares for now at the farmers' market 2x/week come May. And I also hope to build my online orders too, for those who are far away.
I am happy to follow my own way on this. Corporate America offers nothing to people with initiative, drive, and the desire to offer a great product or service at a fair price.

(1,565 posts)Not in the food industry but something similar that is focused on local need.
I don't have the confidence I could make a living at it to the point I am willing to
walk away from a decent paying job. This week has been particularly stressful and
I hate the climate of fear that has taken over the company I work for.
