Getting that deal is of immediate vital interest to Obama. In Obama's mind this isn't about sacrificing the New Deal, and Great Society programs, it's about making a grand bargain.
It's a matter of personal priorities.

(39,909 posts)*Why is it that the Democrats can NEVER slip something into spending bills like
Jobs Programs, or Public Options?
*Why is it that Democrats can NEVER hold the Republican hostage with something they want?
*Why is it that it ALWAYS seems to be a Kubiki Theater where the Democrats loose?
*Why is it that for the last 25 years every single time the Democrats wind up giving away the cow and getting a handful of Beans,
and then stand in front of the TV Cameras patting themselves on the back saying that,
"Hey. Its OK because these might be Magic beans"?
*Why is it that some supposed Democrats on a Liberal Discussion Board are trying to justify Cutting Social Security?
I would think that this is ONE Issue where we would have unanimous agreement:
Cutting Social Security is a BAD thing,
and NO amount of dancing,
or moving goal posts,
or rationalizations,
or excuses,
or Blue Links is going to make it OK.
You will know them by their WORKS,
not by their rhetoric, promises, or excuses.

(45,084 posts)Never in my life did I ever dream, as much as I hate Reagan that I would hope a man I voted for would listen to anything he ever said,
"Ronald Reagan: Social Security has nothing to do with the deficit."
...he said it, and then he implemented a tax on Social Security benefits: http://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=view_post&forum=1002&pid=2618697
Not really hard to make that statement.

(37,428 posts)...they wouldn't have a collective hard-on for cutting SS, and would be praising Obamacare. This deal is a lot bigger than deficit-cutting, and it pains me to see the prez flip-flop again by conflating them.
But he's known for years that a pact with the devil is going to hurt people.
