(CNN) -- Saying he hopes it sets an example for the nation, Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy on Thursday signed what advocacy groups call the strongest and most comprehensive gun legislation in the nation.
The new law bans some weapons as well as the sale or purchase of high-capacity magazines like those used in the Newtown shooting in December that left 20 children and six adults dead.
It also requires background checks for all gun purchases.
"This is a profoundly emotional day, I think, for everyone in this room," Malloy said at the signing ceremony. "We have come together in a way that relatively few places in our nation have demonstrated an ability to do."

(18,402 posts)That's what we learned in Illinois, where in 15 or 20 minutes you can get whatever you want in Indiana, which has some of the laxest laws in the nation. Connecticut is a mere drive away from several other states.
I applaud the law and hope similar laws spread like wildfire. But it doesn't obviate the need for federal legislation on many of these issues. It merely underscores the need for it.
Note: There will be no responses to the usual suspects who jump in to tell me it's illegal to procure guns from another state in this way. That the outlawed guns and magazines (and lack of background checks) exist in these states is the problem. We all need to get on the same page here.
