Why many of us think gun enthusiasts are -- charitably -- myopic:

Here's a link to a history of the Remington Model 760 rifle.

It's extensive, lots of pictures, sales statistics. Doesn't mention it was the model used to slay MLK. Not even in passing.

To most of us, that would be like a history of nuclear weapons that doesn't mention Hiroshima.

1. Comparing the Remington 760

to nuclear weapons is ridiculous at best and disingenuous as well. The nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima (you forgot Nagasaki) was used as it was intended. The 760 was designed as a hunting gun. From your link: "Remington's pump action, centerfire rifles are best known as hunters' guns." That is the first sentence of the piece. It is a technical piece, writing about the specs of the gun, not an all encompassing history of its use.

2. Where does the OP compare the Remington 760 to nuclear weapons?

The comparrison was in how they are talked about, not the weapons themselves..

6. There is no comparison being made of the weapons.

The comparison is how their histories are recorded. Obviously Hiroshima was a significant event involving nuclear weapons, any decent history of nukes is going to include Hiroshima. The history of the 760, which includes many, many pages, doesn't mention unarguably the most famous target the gun had. Gun fetishists have a habit of scrubbing away the bad things guns do while focusing exclusively on the good things.

9. There is no mention

of ANY target at which the 760 has been shot. It is a technical piece. If it were supposed to be an actual piece about how the 760 has been used over the years and did not mention MLK, then there would be an error of ommision.

5. Vast majority of people, even serious gun owners, are not aware of that detail

or that a 6.5 Carcano was used to kill John Kennedy, and the Son of Sam used a Charter Arms Bulldog Pug in .44Spcl. I had to look up pistol model was used on Reagan (Röhm RG-14 .22 cal). Lets add to that weapons used on George Wallace, Malcolm X, Robert Kennedy, and Larry Flynt.

What weapons assassins used by make and model are not something the vast majority of people know or care about.

10. If the Remington 760 had only ever been fired TWICE in anger, and once was at at Dr. King

then your analogy might have the slightest bit of grounding in some kind of real world.

As it is it's simply word salad without dressing (or carrots, tomato, avocado, etc.).
