Campbell Brown: Why is Obama ‘singling out’ the NRA?

Former CNN host Campbell Brown on Thursday suggested that President Barack Obama would be more successful passing gun control if he stopped “singling out” the National Rifle Association (NRA) and focused more on Hollywood and video games.

During an appearance on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Campbell recalled that she had been talking with her husband — former Bush adviser Dan Senor — after the December mass shooting in Connecticut and realized that the debate “became so focused on gun control” instead of on Hollywood and video games.

...

“I’m not going to defend the NRA, they have not done themselves any favors in this, but by singling out the NRA and making them the sole bad guy — gun owners, the sole sort of boogie man in this conversation — I think, and the president did try to address this in his speech yesterday, you created this divide in the country, this rural vs. urban,” Brown told MSNBC. “And the lecturing that came from a lot of urban leaders felt like a tinge of cultural disdain.”

Ah, so the mass shootings have nothing to do with GUNS. They happen because of HOLLYWOOD and VIDEOGAMES? I'm amazed she left out ANTIDEPRESSANTS!

The NRA hasn't been singled out by Obama, the NRA has INJECTED THEMSELVES into the issue with their fear mongering and moronic statements.

Maybe if everything she said wasn't out of the RNC talking points, she could object to people pointing that out.

Look, I know my case is anecdotal, but my son plays those shoot-em-up games and, yet, he still remains one of the most kind-hearted people I know.

10. Is Brown angling to be spokesperson for the annual "Obama's Gonna Grab Your Guns" sale?

In the wake of the "gun grabber" cloud that was positioned over Al Gore's head, Obama avoided gun issues like the plague -- enough so that one of the Saturday Night Live parodies of the Obama-Romney debates had the candidates both answer a question on "what are you going to do about AK-47s?" with "Nothing".

His reward for pretty much conceding defeat on gun issues was relentless fearmongering that he was perpetually about to launch sweeping gun seizures. When these failed to materialize during his first term, the NRA moved the goalpost and said he was waiting for a 2nd term where he could really cut loose.

Right up until Newtown.

He's still not "gun grabbing", but the NRA has has also shown that there's nothing to gain in trying to meet them halfway: he gets nothing from them and pisses people off in his own party. Four years of "focusing on other things" has proven completely ineffectual.

Liberals have complained for years about censorship of sex while allowing excessive violence in movies, TV, and video games. Campbell and Joe make it sound like Democrats are promoting and defending Hollywood style violence and republicans are against it. Where is this simplistic, black and white world that they live in?

13. Why not single out the NRA? They single themselves out, it's their issue.

But it's a stupid question, contrived to suggest prejudice where there is none, and one hopes Ms Brown is aware of that, for her sake, and she is just reading what they put in front of her.
