Ugh. My bet is that most Americans have no clue as to the ramifications of either.
A recent poll conducted by the Pew Research Center shows that a majority of Americans support the Keystone XL pipeline.
According to the nonpartisan group, 66 percent of Americans favor construction of the pipeline, which would extend from the tar sands in Alberta, Canada through the Midwest, while only 23 percent oppose it.
The organization also surveyed views on other environmental topics and found that Americans were divided in their views on climate change and fracking. The survey found that 69 percent of Americans believe that there is solid evidence that the world is warming, up two percentage points since 2012. On fracking, the controversial drilling process by which a mixture of water and chemicals is used to extract oil and natural gas, 48 percent of respondents said they supported the practice, while 38 percent said they opposed it.
Pew surveyed 1,501 adults from March 13-17, just days before a pipeline ruptured in Mayflower, Ark., killing nearby ducks and flooding suburban streets with crude oil. The leak forced the evacuation of 22 homes.

(685 posts)Is to ship tar sands from Canada down to Texas to be refined and then out of the country. The damn final product will not even remain in this country. Idiots far and wide.

(3,041 posts)Thanks to Alabama, but probably not enough to stop it. Encouraging fracking numbers though, 38% opposed is pretty healthy considering how new the practice is and less than 50% support.. I think we'll see those numbers reverse within a year or so. YouTube videos of brown tap water do wonders.

(3,526 posts)....claiming "that a majority of Americans support the Keystone XL pipeline"?
Pew Charitable Trusts, the parent of the Pew Research Center, is the sole beneficiary of seven individual trusts established between 1948 and 1979 by two sons and two daughters of Sun Oil Company founder Joseph N. Pew and his wife, Mary Anderson Pew.
If I remember correctly, Pew was also off by quite a bit in their presidential election polling, pushing the "Romney is ahead" meme right up to the end.
Just my opinion, but the Huffington Post has also become pretty suspect in their "reporting" these days. I'm surprised you even linked an article from that source.

(114,904 posts)(Texaco). The NRDC (Natural Resources Defense Counsel) was founded by- wait for it- The Rockefeller family. Joe Kennedy was a Nazi sympathizer, and on and on. Your argument is laughably sucky.
And Pew was in the middle of the pack in 2012 and one of the most accurate in 2008.
And anyone who thinks this poll isn't likely accurate has little knowledge of the information level of Americans.

(114,904 posts)and btw, that is a lame non-response. The kind you make when you don't have a real response.

(3,526 posts)...I'll just post it again:
Why are you surprised that a polling company with roots in the oil industry would publish a poll claiming "that a majority of Americans support the Keystone XL pipeline"?

I stand by my comments....is there something you don't understand about them?

(22,912 posts)The public was once pro-nuclear also. The industry always gets the first words in these debates, because they can buy them, but opposition is spreading as organizing against fracking widens. The pipleline is a different matter. It is a fast moving freight train with less time to stop it. Of course there is now another spill for the public to take note of...

We certainly have a shitty track record.... supporting shit that turns out to be disasters.
In a few years, two thirds of Americans will say it wasn't worth it.

(35,015 posts)Just like anything else, unless people are personally affected by it, they don't feel strongly or take the time to investigate the consequences. They don't care. I think the word 'support' really means, "sure why not, now leave me alone".

(11,862 posts)Spoiler here
Before the debate 38% agreed that we should NOT frack and 38% disagreed
After the debate 53% agreed and 42% disagreed
Undecided before 24% after 5% and most changed their minds to NOT FRACK!
