Since North Carolina Gop'ers have introduced a bill to establish a state religion, to counter the Constitution of the United States, they are trying to establish xristian sharia law in that state (good luck with that, not!). I thought it might be fun to pick a religion for each state and try to explain why?
I live in California and I would like Rastafarianism to become our state religion. The reasons are clear enough. All people entering California will be given 1 gram of marijuana that they must consume before entering the state. If they don't consume it, they cannot enter the state. This is to let possible converts know before hand what my state is all about!

(39,171 posts)so it is not that hard to figure out.
I'm next door in MS, but grew up in New Orleans.
Oh wow. I see you live in Rhode Island. I figured Louisiana since Lafayette to New Orleans is pretty much the Catholic belt, and the counties aren't counties, they are Parishes.

(39,171 posts)New England (plus New York) is the most Catholic part of America. Interesting enough French Canadians (the ones who didn't go to Louisiana) are a big percentage of that number in RI and Mass.
Aerows
(39,961 posts)Yes, the French Canadians have a heavy influence in Southern Louisiana, so naturally it has a heavy Catholic influence. I didn't realize Catholicism was so prevalent in MA and RI. It makes sense, though, since there are also a lot of Irish and Italian communities in MA, in particular.

(39,961 posts)not quite as bad as the Pentecostals, but bad enough. Pentecostal women wearing no make up, their hair never cut, all big as a house and wearing skirts to the floor at all-you-can-eat buffets are pretty ubiquitous here.
liberal_at_heart
(12,081 posts)Is your problem with them that they are not eye candy or that their religion tells them what to wear?
Aerows
(39,961 posts)and please don't attempt to twist what I said into something it isn't. Though I will say this - if your entire table is filled with women that have non-cut hair down to their waists, don't wear make up, and are in skirts to the floor while waving bibles around and praying loudly before hitting the buffet, then yes, I will probably assume that you are either Pentecostal or Evangelical.
If you aren't in the South, you probably could not fathom how common that scenario is.
liberal_at_heart
(12,081 posts)objection is that they are taught that they have to look like that then I agree.

(39,961 posts)"woman should not cut her hair", "nor adornment", "dress modestly" " and be submissive to men bullshit that disgusts me thoroughly. They don't get to waive the Bible around when there are men present, either, because they are taught to be completely submissive to men, but that doesn't stop them from trying to pound it into each other in an attempt to be the "purity squadron leader".
And by the way - I'm a woman, and that bullshit is offensive to me. Don't try to take it as criticism that they aren't "sexy" - it's criticism that they are so rooted in Biblical teachings that force them to be less than their men that makes me ill. And there isn't a damn thing wrong with being sexy, either.

(90,764 posts)Small town in a mostly rural Parrish in Louisiana. Driving into town for the first time we saw a sign for "Occupy Baptist Church #1" and we both wondered if there was another Occupy Baptist and what caused the split. A few miles down the road we got our answer. Another sign read "Occupy Baptist Church # 2" and right below that was written "no guns allowed".
We laughed...nervously.

(6,036 posts)As it was the defacto state religion in MA prior to the Constitution. Today the religion with the most representation ion the population is probably Catholicism. Which probably has the founders spinning in their graves.

(40,416 posts)There are a lot of them down state in Grand Rapids and environs. All that predestinationalist claptrap.
But there are so many little unaffiliated churches sprinkled hither and yon that it would difficult to say whether any one denomination has a majority. In rural areas it could be anything, and MI has a lot of rural territory.
However, in the U.P., where a lot of Suomilainens and Scandinavians live, it's likely Lutheran.
A lot of unbelievers about here and there, too.
