RALEIGH, N.C. -- The body of a missing North Carolina woman was found inside her wrecked car, three days after it was ordered by a state trooper to be towed away from the crash scene.
Carolyn Ann Watkins, 62, of Clayton was reported missing by her son early Monday after she failed to show up at work.
An accident report filed Friday by N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper Marlon Williams shows her crashed 2000 Pontiac was found Friday morning in a deep ditch near Smithfield, about 30 miles southeast of Raleigh. Both air bags deployed.

Watkins' son, Al Parker, wondered if his mother's life might have been saved if the trooper had noticed her in the car.

(20,582 posts)We were trained to check and recheck inside the vehicle when airbags have deployed and / or it's a mangled mess, to check underneath, and for a large area around if no occupant immediately visible or is, but is unconscious. The police always do the same .... I'm assuming it's the same everywhere, so it's really surprising and hard to understand how this woman was missed. Heartbreaking for her family, and it does make you wonder if she possibly still had a chance at life. Poor woman.
