(41,990 posts)These kids are working hard to feel represented when virtually no one pays attention to this aspect of the area.

(7,291 posts)of those living in Mississippi is through various films I have seen. The most recent was the segments in the documentary by Pelosi's daughter just before the 2008 election. I felt the characters interviewed were complete stereotypes. What you are doing is beautiful, wonderful and necessary. The ignorant thank you

(2,500 posts)Very much. I wish all the state shared the liberal outlook that I observed in coastal south Mississippi. Shout out to Hancock County, a beautiful area, with the best oyster poboys ever.

(41,990 posts)Roger runs Cathead, the best blues store in the world, in Clarksdale. He and Jeff have done two outstanding documentaries, M for Mississippi and We Juke Up in Here, both featuring the absolute best Delta Blues music out there. Moonshine and Mojo Hands will be a web based reality show (I expect it'll be good, not Jersey Shore. They're not like that.) They've got a Kickstarter campaign going too, if your blues playing friends have a buck or two to spare.
Plus, they published some of my poetry so I'm particular.

(4,667 posts)But this is only one side of the state and its culture.
Any state that would hoist this symbol as its state flag still has work to erase the hate which saturates its people and culture.
The Confederacy, by definition of history, is the most anti-American Country this Nation has ever faced. It was founded by people who betrayed the United States. The separate country was formed by people that would rather work towards the destruction of the United States than end slavery.
Its symbol is more destructive to our country than the Nazi war image. The remnants of this group formed the Ku Klux Klan, which is the most violent terrorist organization in the history of the country.
Its inexcusable for any state, especially a state that receives far more in benefits from the Federal Government that what it pays in taxes to have such a Nazi war symbol as its emblem.
This is a state that still honors Robert E. Lee's birthday as a state holiday. This is a man who betrayed his own country and killed hundreds of thousands of American soldiers all to help uphold the southern way of life. This of course was an economy and culture which was built on the backs of slaves.
In the 2008 and 2012 Presidential elections, Barack Obama received only about 10% of the white vote in Mississippi. The state ranks as one of the least educated in the Nation. Belief in far right paranoia topics such as birtherism score much higher here than in other parts of the country. And in its entire political history, Mississippi has never sent a woman to Congress, not even the House of Representatives!
This is a state that still has a long way to go.
