the issue is a losing proposition for them .. if SCOTUS forces all states to permit gay marriage ... the issue is off the table, especially given that public opinion is turning against status quo .. no Republican would like to be associated with it.
This is not going to drag for decades like Roe V Wade ... any back lash will be short live and the issue will die a natural death very quickly..
Which is a good thing !!! So I am hoping the Republican Justices see this and vote accordingly.

(11,804 posts)They know it would become legal in a few, but they could keep it illegal in many states - maybe most. Also, while Karl Rove and a few might see it as a losing issue, there are plenty others who think that Americans don't want this and that it's a winner.

(18,964 posts)Roe v Wade has been a rallying cry for Repubs for years...when they held all the power under the Bush administration they could have make great big dents, if not outright repeal, rights granted under Roe...they didn't.
They raise tons of money off of anti-Roe sentiment and (as another poster mentioned) rally the faithful around anti-Roe rhetoric year-after-year.
They can do the same thing with DOMA and Prop 8 if they are overturned....
Get it?/
They don't want to win...they want to be victims forever! It's good for business (votes)

(7,574 posts)and one will become the Christian party. The Republican Party will include libertarians, and mainstream conservatives. Don't know where the Tea Party fits in; I've never figured them out: part racist, part libertarian, part Christian rightists. They may disappear as a group.

(18,964 posts)I think there might be three wings because the Randian libertarians probably won't go along with either the mainstream conservatives or the christian wing....the true randians won't follow christian fundamentalism..but
at least one of the parties will want to hold marriage equality as another "bloody shirt" to rally funds and votes around.
