DIETRICH A Dietrich science teacher is being investigated by the states professional standards commission after a complaint from parents over his teaching methods.
Tim McDaniel is being investigated after a complaint was filed by a handful of parents who objected to how McDaniel taught the reproductive system, Dietrich Superintendent Neil Hollingshead said.
It is highly unlikely it would end with his dismissal, Hollingshead said. Maybe a letter of reprimand from the school board.
According to McDaniel, four parents were offended that he explained the biology of an orgasm and included the word vagina during his lesson on the human reproductive system in a tenth-grade biology course.
I teach straight out of the textbook, I dont include anything that the textbook doesnt mention, McDaniel said. But I give every student the option not attend this class when I teach on the reproductive system if they dont feel comfortable with the material.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jess Helsley - 13 hours ago: I am incredibly proud to be an Idahoan. I have spent every day of my life proud of the fact that I grew up in a state that is famous for its incredible mountain ranges, whitewater rivers, and incredible history. However, when asked about where I am from, I am NOT AT ALL proud to tell the rest of the world that I spent the majority of my learning years in Dietrich, Idaho. My family moved to Dietrich when I was in the 3rd grade. From the first day I attended school in the Dietrich School District, until the day that I graduated from that same school, I was ridiculed because I was considered an unfit member of the community. Because my family did not attend the same church that the rest of the community attended, I was considered a heathen, and was not allowed to play with certain kids that were in my class. I was looked down upon by a community for 10 years. This form of bullying is not something that I would wish upon any child; no matter their race, religion, or sexual orientation.
It was a privilege to be a student in Mr. McDaniel's class. He was one of the few teachers that did not care what religion I practiced. Rather, he focused on my interest in the scientific field and gave me the confidence to pursue science- even when the school district was not willing to fund an actual science lab with working equipment. Thankfully, there is now a lab with functional equipment. Unfortunately, Dietrich still appears to be a community that desires to demean and ridicule the talented individuals working to educate the greater good. I may not be proud to have grown up in Dietrich, Idaho, but I am proud to have endured. I, unlike a number of my peers from Dietrich High, did not fall into the uneducated biological trap of unintentional parenting. I, thanks to the encouragement of Tim McDaniel and other mentors, went on to pursue a collegiate degree in a scientific field, and continue that pursuit as a funded researcher at the University of Idaho. Stand proud Mr. McDaniels. Science is science, and clouding science with religion- as the Dietrich School Board has done for too many years is not only illegal, but immoral. There is truly no one better than you to teach science like it is! Invite me as a guest lecturer and we will raise the roof of Dietrich High.

(17,320 posts)doesn't know the situation. The right-wingers from at least as far back is 1960, i.e. John Birch Society, have been desperately trying to take over control of the public schools from the Federal and State Gvts. and unfortunately they have been highly successful in doing that, thanks to the support from the oligarchs who need to be able to indoctrinate the children.
This flap over the proper use of the word vagina is beyond ridiculous, it is absurd and troubling.
Since when has a biology teacher been required to use euphemisms to designate body parts?
freshwest
(53,661 posts)They taught us about driving safely, the danger of smoking and STDs. They didn't say don't do it, just offered consequences.
The texts were supplemented with public safety films of car wrecks and talks from police officers about the dangers of driving too fast or drunk. Others were of the effect of smoking including lung biopsies - really turned us off cigarettes. The STD part had pictures of the graphic nature of untreated disease.
If a teacher can't use the proper medical terms, how does one explain to young ladies about their menstrual cycle without scaring them half to death?
Wait, we shouldn't even have to find different words. They might as well homeschool these kids if they can't teach them. The quiver full groups will tell the girls they don't need to learn to read because they need to cook and make babies, and the young men can pretend that they don't know what they're doing in bed.
This is deliberate. The Idiocracy or the Brave New World is being installed on the installment plan. The kids that are in this system will never be able to move up in society. Thank goodness for the teacher trying to hold back the darkness the fundies and plutos want to impose on so many. This is what becomes of letting the media miinform and miseducate the public into fantasy land.

(1,009 posts)I remember in 7th grade, our science teacher talked about penis and vagina and how baby was made, oral and anal sex and no one (AFAIK) batted an eyelash.
She talked about condom use and other contraceptives and how the fertilized egg embedded in the uterus.
She pronounced vagina as "pagina" and after that class, I was in the library searching for that word in the "P" section of the dictionary. Let me tell you, my vocabulary grew by a significant amount that day, especially in the "P" words.
The thing is, at that time, in 7th grade, I didn't know the official term for the vagina. I think I knew penis for the male sexual organ, but we of course used "pee-pee" or "ding-dong". I don't think we used "cock" or even "dick".
Also, in 5th grade, a friend was over at my home and I said, "Fuck!" and he asked whether I knew what it meant. I gave the evasive, "Of course, it's, you know..." I don't think I had understood the mechanics of sexual intercourse at that time. Our 7th grade teacher clearly explained it to us, though.
And now I read that this teacher taught this in 10th grade. Unless those students have been hiding from the internet, I'm sure all of them have seen some of the most outrageous and amazing free porn already since 5th grade. I grew up pre-internet, so we were stuck looking at magazines if we ever had the chance.

(36,281 posts)I'm in the midst of a five year post-tenure review, and had quite a nice file to send up to the committee until someone noticed that among the literally thousands of student evaluations of my courses two students in two consecutive years complained that I showed pics of naked women in my introductory zoology class. If you haven't already guessed, the pics in question turned out to be anatomical DIAGRAMS of human female reproductive anatomy and morphology, including secondary sex characters, e.g. genitals and breasts. We use humans as models of mammalian reproduction because it's easier for students to relate to their own bodies. They slides I use-- supplied by the textbook publisher and identical to illustrations in the text-- are clinical drawings, but I've nonetheless spent weeks now explaining that to committee after committee and administrator after administrator.
Un-fucking-believable.

(8,138 posts)Preventing a teacher from teaching about vaginas and orgasms -- and all the other things the extremists would rather he not mention -- leads to stupid (and pregnant, and STD-ridden) kids.
I remember how impressed I was, as a sixth-grader and as a ninth-grader in the late 1960s-early '70s, when I had teachers who talked about our anatomy and our periods and birth control and what went where in such a straightforward way -- no couching the vital information in euphemistic terms that repressed conservatives might favor. Made me realize I didn't have to feel weird about my sexuality, or about having natural curiosity and desire.
This kind of muzzling of biology teachers makes me absolutely crazy.
