and whenever Libertarians make this point, especially regarding computers... and the internet, whisper in their ear DARPA NET.

THe first reaction is... WTF is darpa net?

The second is... you mean it was NOT private hands that got that going?

Or for that matter that Mosaic was not privately developed?

Of course they really don't like that.

I also usually bring the fact that private cops are not cops. And that they will be the first to dial 911 when they need one.

of course teachers use computers, white boards, on line classes... school is way different than when I was a kid.

the DMV also has a lot of services on line.

What would the practical up grade to the police be? ED 2000 from robocop.

If law enforcement was not massively upgraded would the whole drone thing even be an issue?

The whole thing simply shows Libertarians don't even understand what the government does, how they do it, and most importantly how they interact an enable the private sector.

The CHP CAD system. It feeds major incidents to a CHP traffic site straight from on the field cruisers and dispatch centers no private company would do that.

The schoolbus looks to be a more modern one, and not one from circa 1983...Buses have made great leaps in passenger/driver safety, fuel efficiency and emissions...

The chalkboards? LOL at that! It's easy to see how long it's been since the keen wit behind this has been in a public school classroom...

Even the DMV in my state has been streamlined and improved...Almost everything you'd want to do can either be done over the phone or online (in fact they charge you extra for getting non-essential stuff done in person now)...I went from having to go to the DMV once yearly to once every five years...

As for the cops; well, I've known a lot of libertarians over the years, and to a man they've never really had a problem with heavyhanded police tactics as long as it was confined to, shall we say, "certain" communities??

I suppose only Libertarians would think that comparing PRODUCTS for consumption by consumers against government SERVICES was a valid comparison.

Fucking idiots.

of this:

Privatization no panacea for government (July 2010)

A task force assembled by Gov. Christie recently reported that New Jersey’s government could save a bundle simply by turning over many of its core functions — from motor-vehicle services to school facilities — to the private sector. But thanks partly to another governor named Christie, New Jerseyans need not wait in suspense for the results of this government innovation. That’s because the state already has some disastrous and relatively recent experience with privatization — much of it in the areas singled out by the task force.

Christie deserves credit for cutting the state budget and looking for more ways to do so. And so far this is only a report (though one ordered up and roundly praised by the governor himself). But given the state’s history, some of the task force’s ideas weren’t even worth examining, let alone pursuing any further.

In 1998, Gov. Christie Whitman’s outsourcing of motor-vehicle inspections to a private company led to epic lines and widespread outrage. It later emerged that the sweetheart contract had gone to a company associated with avid campaign giving. Whitman’s privatization of motor-vehicle agency offices also contributed to interminable waits, as well as corruption and security breaches. That helped end the Division of Motor Vehicles’ long death spiral and bring about an overhaul that replaced it with today’s Motor Vehicle Commission.

And the responses to the original article:

"Really, did we learn nothing from the EZ Pass implementation debacle or the failed privatization of the DMV? "

__________

"failed DMV???? are you nuts? it's way better! not even close. i hope you were kidding and I missed the humor"

___________

"Since the DMV was privatized, I have had to wait no more then 20-minutes for in-person transactions (last October I walked in, registered my van, walked out in less then 10 minutes. Inspection of my old van took less then 10-minutes right after that).
-
However, the DMV is not a 'state'. There are to many things that can go wrong when dealing with the complexities of a state being in private hands."

"a clear sign of how moronic the righties in NJ are.

the MVC is not private, its public. The DMV was private. Since it became the MVC years ago its been 100% public run. You are commending the system for being wonderful not even realizing that the very system you commend for being wonderfully run as a private organization is PUBLICLY RUN AND HAS BEEN EVEN SINCE THE FAILED PRIVATELY RUN DMV THE ORIGINAL POSTER WAS TALKING ABOUT."
