Chicago: Homeless evicted from Uptown viaduct

from the Sun-Times:

Brown: Homeless evicted from Uptown viaduct
BY MARK BROWN March 23, 2013 12:34AM

A week after I wrote about the homeless people living under Lake Shore Drive at Wilson Avenue, police and city sanitation crews kicked them out.

Nobody seems to be able to explain how that came to happen. Ald. James Cappleman (46th) denies any involvement.

First came the sanitation workers, who disposed of everything the homeless people could not carry with them, including clothing, blankets and makeshift bedding that had cluttered the sidewalk.

Later came police who handed out tickets to the homeless people who remained behind and warned them they would be arrested if they returned. ...................(more)

in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.

It's funny: you take Wilson west for less than two miles from Lake Shore Drive, and you're in a neighborhood with million dollar homes. Between Clark and Western is beautiful. Our currently imprisoned governor lived just south of Wilson a bit west of there, but still only three miles or so from this viaduct. That neighborhood is called Ravenswood Manor, and it is indeed manorial. There, you're talking 2, 3, 4 million. More on the river, with their little piers jutting out. Of course, east of Clark is sketch to the water. Ah, North Side.

Once the attention is brought, the law comes in. Always the case. It is one reason you see homeless in certain parks in the daylight, to keep from people seeing where they sleep at night. One must never let on where they rest. It is the primary target for people that want the homeless to just go away.

After the reporter was there, I am sure many were hunting for new areas but did not get done fast enough. It is hard to find safe places. When you do find one you do all you can to protect it. But when the law finds it...
