How about some granularity? How many suicides? How many gang bangers, etc?
Just throwing up a number means nothing given the complexity of the problem.

(11,996 posts)7. I took it to mean the number of people killed with guns.
Isn't that the case?
Maybe it means that the problem really isn't that complex. (its the guns)

(2,252 posts)8. Here's the link to the HuffPo graphic...
The Huffington Post compiled news reports of gun-related homicides and accidental deaths in the U.S. since the massacre in Newtown, Conn. on the morning of Dec. 14.
Click it to get the animation of their data - http://data.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/gun-deaths
Slate has also been reporting their compilation of data since December 14 on How Many People Have Been Killed by Guns Since Newtown?
They report 2883 or more gun deaths since Newton through March 21, 2013.
They state that their data is necessarily incomplete:
Of course, these figures are incomplete. Not all reports get caught by @GunDeaths news alerts or his followers. Suicides, which are estimated to make up as much as 60 percent of gun deaths, typically go unreported. Nevertheless, we at Slate want to assemble the data as best we can.
The graphic on the site is interactive, allowing you to click on each little adult, teen, or child, female or male corpse silhouette to access a news article reporting the death. And they provide a link for downloading their data, so you may perform whatever analysis you choose.
At least 2883 gun deaths. 97 days. 29.7 deaths per day ... average.
So the incident at Newtown doesn't represent an average kind of day...
Newtown is unique for the number of 'Child' figures, for the locality of the deaths. And, in addition to the 28 Newtown deaths ...yes, Nancy and Adam Lanza are included ... the graphic reports what other gun deaths occurred elsewhere on December 14, 2012 ... an additional 21 people died from gun violence. 47 people, including 20 children, 1 day.

Logical
(22,457 posts)15. I agree, why bother trying to solve mass murders (about 150 deaths a year) and focus on why people..
want to kill someone so often in this country.

(22,000 posts)12. Here's a suggestion
Find out the majority of states where your Facebook friends are from and start writing down the numbers of deaths in their states. For instance I listed 7 states with how many dead in each state and then gave the total number of people my Facebook friends that live in those states.
