West Virginia Newspaper Shares Reader’s Awesome ‘Kill Everybody’ Voicemail

A West Virginia newspaper is taking flak for running a reader’s anonymous voicemail rant in its letters column, simply because the reader suggested some views that were a little bit outside the mainstream. In response to an article about the maybe-trumped-up firing of a lesbian teacher, a reader left a message on the Lincoln Journal’s voicemail praising the school board for its wisdom and suggesting some other improvements for the world. The message, as printed in the paper’s “Gripes and Gratitudes” column, read:

We were really glad to hear that School Board is getting rid of them queers. The next thing is we need to get rid of all the n****rs, the spics, the kikes and the wops. You know even them Catholics, they are wrong as baby eaters. We need to clear them people out and have good, white, God fearing Christians and everybody else needs to be put to death for their abominations. We’ll keep Lincoln County white and right. Thank you.

It was awfully thoughtful of the caller to use asterisks like that, we think. A Charleston TV station reports that many readers were upset by the remarks, which just goes to show that some people in West Virginia don’t appreciate the value of having a rich public dialogue that values all points of view.

Who the hell use "kike" and "wop" anymore? I'm surprised he didn't mention the Irish. Somebody needs to update their bigotry for the 21st century.

Like you'd expect this place is a bastion of diversity: As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 22,108 people, 8,664 households, and 6,532 families residing in the county. The population density was 50 people per square mile (20/km²). There were 9,846 housing units at an average density of 22 per square mile (9/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 99.04% White, 0.06% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.06% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

[font color="navy" face="Verdana"]The way I heard it, during a mass migration of Italians through Ellis Island into the U.S. many years ago, many of the immigrants didn't have birth certificates or other forms of documentation, so their forms were stamped "WOP" for "WithOut Papers." The nickname stuck as a perjorative for Italians.

I don't know how accurate this version of the story is, but I'm sure someone else here at DU can verify or otherwise clarify.

Used as a disparaging term for a person of Italian birth or descent. [Italian dialectal guappo, thug, from Spanish guapo, handsome, dashing, braggart, bully]

That "gripes and gratitudes" section of the paper is horrible most weeks, this one is really bad.

We are talking about Lincoln County here folks....if you lived in this state, that would be enough of a description.

A "wop" is an italian....I am half italian and half polish, so yea, I have heard 'em all

The people are racist, very racist and very stuck in the old time ways. Most are on checks, and I really mean that....common fonder at gatherings is how to get "on a check"

I do not really want to diss the inlaws in public, so let's just say, take every description of Appalachia, any movie or doc you ever saw about the area and multiply by 10.

My husband left in 1987 and never looked back, we go for family things, have a farm there, but never would live there.

this area lost loads of 18-20 year olds to the big cities, looking for the real life out there.

The result, many many mixed race children there, and loads of Papaws really peeved. Their daughters moved back home with "city" children. I will tell you this, there is not one single Black (or any other miniority) family in a certain town in that county. My FIL preacher made a comment in front of the whole family once because my "northern" son had saggy basketball shorts on....and I let him have it good....a Christian preacher, callin' a 13 yr old names just cause his pants sagged? and ....a racist Christian, are you kiddin' me?

have some kind of slur for everyone different from themselves, it's embarrassing to
claim this as home sometimes.
