Another Feel-Good Server Story :)

(There's so much damn bad news out there, and DU does a great job covering it, imho. I'm not ignoring the doom and gloom, I'm just trying to inject any good I find along the way each day. ~ OGR

EDIT TO ADD that if you want to do something easy to help another DUer, see this post in the DU Lounge.

To Make Up For Those Guys Who Stiffed You

"So, I had a table complain that their steak didn’t look like the picture in the menu. The picture was of a Rare Filet…he ordered his filet medium well (right there is your problem…you are ruining a great steak.) I then explained to the man that the picture was of a rare filet and that we put steak weights on our steaks so they can cook faster. He responded saying that someone had told him that last time. I explained that he could ask for it cooked without next time and even offered him a new steak cooked with out the steak weight. He refused! He then asked to speak to my manager. My manager told him exactly the same thing…he still refused a new steak. Well, the rest of the 6 top was great: no problems, no one ever had to ask for refills, I was on top of everything. When I dropped the check off he said it was his turn to pay and started to yell at me about his steak again, even though he ate the whole damn thing! The bill was $98.40 and the man left me $100 and said keep the change. Thanks for my $1.60 tip!!!

Well, this table overheard the whole thing and asked me if he stiffed me. I didn’t comment just kept my mouth shut and smiled. He asked how do you tip out? I said 3% of total sales. So if no one left tips all night I have to take money out of my pocket and pay for those people to eat here. I said it comes with this line of work and I make good money but sometimes you just get customers like this who are never happy. He left me this and a $5 bill to make it a $45 tip on a $57 bill. This made my night! I know there are good people out there. To this guy…thank you! From a pregnant server who doesn’t have to dig out of her own pocket. And before anyone says get a real job, I have a degree… actually two. This is REAL money, not monopoly money."

My 20-year-old is on a mission to enlighten her friends. If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to go out to eat!
